Also, just be smart about expansing. If you start a ritual, turtle. If you aren't planning on starting one soon, attack
"..with 10 turns to go" = you most likely started a ritual. Every single time you do so, a number of armies spawns to attack your ritual sites, mostly Chaos and Skaven, plus 1 army of the other vortex-contender factions (=wh2 factions except Tomb Kings).
In other words - either expand, or go for doing rituals. Doing both at the same time wears your defenses thin.
Backing up just a bit - I actually got down to the last ritual before scrapping all my saves clear back to turn 52 (Was on 124 - I make checkpoint saves when I feel secure). Wasn't expecting the KFC double stack on the last ritual. Generally speaking I hunker down and call everyone back on the rituals.
Campaign was good up until I hit the LAST ritual and I only had 6 stacks total. Keep in mind they were fairly simplistic builds.
4 Phoenix guard
4 Swords of Hoeth
5 LSG
2 Star Dragons
1 Ballista (Forget the actual name)
2 Dragon Prince
1 Lord
1 Hero
There might have been slight deviations here and there, but for the most part this is the standard army I shoot for in HE campaign.
I guess my biggest question really is - do I need to expand so I can afford more than 6 stacks for end game?
