EG:
left Click selecting a melee group (or multiple!) of say shielded swordmen and then point to an area and hold right click and drag from LEFT TO RIGHT in a horizontal line and you see a bunch of little yellow triangles that will be pointing (in this particular case) north. If however you did the same however dragged from RIGHT TO LEFT the triangles would then be facing south instead.
Obviously this applies spatially, so if you had a line being setup vertically, then top to bottom would = left to right and thus face east, while dragging from bottom to top would have them face the west as the south equivalent rotated 90 degrees.
You can do this during the deployment phase of the game, so I highly recommend you mess around with your formations at that point just to get used to the feel and to get your head around the general idea of orientating your troops.
During battle you can do this on the fly, like changing archer divisions to point sideways to lay the hurt down on flanking cavalry that are still getting into position.
Hope this helps you :)
