Most accurate description would be, they are like Vampire Counts, but if Vampire Counts don't have ranged units, then in Vampire Coast EVERYTHING SHOOTS. Even the walking ship's, that can shoot when they walk, have guy's that shoot from the walking ship.
I've got just the 1 settlement and 5 armies, losing 15k per turn but over 300k in the bank due to sacking and battle loot. It's great having no responsibilities just sailing around making havoc! I'm 185 turns in and no where close to finishing because I have to help my allies get the land I need to finish. It' so refreshing than the usual late game steam rolling and boredom. I have strong enemies in the Dwarfs and Elves still plus Chaos hoards popping in but I can run easily and have no towns to defend.
The units themselves are awesome to look at and very strong once you level them up. I love it. I'm playing as Count Noctilus on very hard. Highly recommend this DLC.
EDIT: I failed my first game 100 turns in because I tried to land grab as usual but playing without cities is much better as the you can build from your army/ship. All my other lords are the ones you get from research and they don't have the annoying loyalty mechanic and can also build/recruit from their ship.
Also, raising the dead means pop up armies if you need them in a jam.
Can you trade that dlc? Not so much money right now :O
Vampirates scratched my itch. Firing lines. Tactics and spells that fit the strategy so well. And as much as people might lie and try to tell you that all they have is black powder they are wrong. They have anvils such as promethean/leviathans and syreens as well as very decent hammers in depth guard and bloated corpses. You just don't have cav which is where you rely on gunnery mobs and arty to wipe them off the flanks, depth guard Polearms or zombie spear mobs can help pin or finish them off.
Ultimately I enjoyed them 10x more than tomb kings.
Always recommend watching some Youtube Let's Plays of a faction for a bit and see if the gameplay interests you any. You can also buy the DLC and then request a refund if you don't play it for more than 2 hours and don't enjoy it.
