WH2 can combine both WH1 and WH2 own maps.

Look at the races each game offers and see what interests you more.

I always recommend going with the game that you enjoy the races for more. For those that don't care about that, I recommend starting with the first game since it's cheaper and from there you'll know if you want to get into the second game. Plus the first game is still great value down the line if you do end up getting the second game since it gives you access to the combined map of both games.

Warhammer one is faster paced, warhammer 2 has longer term times, especially if you play mortal empires but even vortex takes a lot longer. Warhammer one is more sandbox than two as the default campaign in two has an overarching shared objective for all factions. 2 has a lot of new mechanics but what's really important is your race interests. Empire, bretonia, dwarves, orks and vampires for warhammer 1 without dlc and skaven, high elves, dark elves, and lizardmen for two without dlc.

Honestly had more fun with warhammer 1 personally, especially after revisiting it recently, the short turns make a huge difference. No alt tabbing and watching YouTube between turns even in coop. It was actually shocking how much smoother an experience it was.

ITT: terrible advice.

If you're new to Total War in general, going Warhammer first is going to be a little overwhelming, but it is manageable so long as you keep with it and are willing to learn. Total War games are 50% intuitive common sense, 25% practice, and 25% weird, frustrating quirks that can only be learned the hard way.

I would go Warhammer 1 for your first experience. It is still a solid standalone, even without Warhammer 2 and the cosmic balancing mess that is Mortal Empires. WH1 is much easier to run on higher settings, and can help ease you into the genre's mechanics. It also has the four most solidly built and balanced factions: the Empire, Dwarfs, Vampire Counts, and Greenskins.

If you are new to the bone, the best way to start is to play WH1 and pick the Empire. You will encounter just about every vital mechanic the game has to offer, and their unit names are simple and easily memorized / understood. And all of the community's stupid inside jokes and memes revolve around the Empire too.

---DLCS---
Now we get to CA's mortal follies, known colloquially as "DLC". Warhammer has lots of stuff to download, some free, some not. Many of the DLCs are factions, such as Asrai (wood elves), Bretonnia, and Beastmen, etc. Even if you do not have this DLC, these factions will still be in the game, just not playable. Do not buy these right away. Pick them up later if they interest you. You will lose nothing by not buying these.

The other DLCs are Lord / Regiment packs like Grim&Grave, and King&Warlord. These include unique characters to the Warhammer universe as well as some additional units. I can recommend these, as they are low in price and offer an overall better experience to the base factions.

And there is one more DLC: blood pack. Yes, you have to pay to put blood in the game, and it makes the game look worse due to how poor quality it is. An absolute atrocity. CA should be ashamed.
---DLCS OVER---

There you go, a condensed summary of Warhammer for a newcomer. Feel free to ask, the WH community is pretty open to helping (except the multiplayer community, everyone hates them).

Go for Warhammer 1 first. Its cheaper. You don’t necesarrily need to buy the dlcs at first, since all the content is in game already for you to play against.

Warhammer 2 is does offer more features overall per race, but it can be a bit more complicated in the campaign.

In the end, wait for the black friday sale to get both games.

Great thing about these games is that ALL the paid dlc content is already in the game so that you can experiance playing against them. You can then pick and choose them.

thank you everyone for your responses.
generally in an instance like this i personally go for whatever costs lower, but in this case, for some reason both wh1 and wh2 cost exactly the same in my steam.
Nukular Power Nov 11, 2019 @ 11:16pm
buy them both, play 2 hours in each, then refund the one you liked less

Because they're both still relevant.
But on sale WH1 is 75% off and WH2 is 60-66% off.

DLC wise also if i recall you need to have WH1 to unlock some of the factions for play in WH2. its kidda odd
Elitewrecker PT Nov 13, 2019 @ 4:58am
Because you're unlocking WH1's entire content (with new overhauls) in WH2.

with new overhauls? how? with modding you mean?

No, Dwarfs, Empire and Vampires Counts (and next Greenskins, and afterwards possibly more) have more mechanics than in WH1.
