Is this not the greatest game ever made?
We are not playing a game folks, we are making fantasy history!

I bought a physical copy of Medieval 2 on release; it was broken and remained mostly broken for its entire life span. There was nothing fun about it. The way units moved was sluggish and robotic, and of course pathing was as broken as ever. I tired nearly every mod on TWCenter and nothing could make that pile enjoyable to play.

Nothing could fix the AI's habit of spamming tiny 3 unit stacks everywhere.

At least half the reason people mention M2 as the best is due to nostalgia glasses.

Medieval 2 was the last Total War before Warhammer that I liked. I put thousands of hours in. I loved it, but it's kind of hard to go back to after Warhammer. What baffles me is that the broken mess Rome 2 is on anyone's favourite game list. I bought it as soon as it was released and after a few months it was still broken on the most fundemental level. I've heard some say that after all these years they've actually fixed it, but I just don't care to even install it to find out anymore. It's certainly hard for me to believe, because everything about that game on a design and technical level was just wrong.

Because of that it took a lot for me to return to the series. A friend that I used to play the Warhammer tabletop game with gifted me both Warhammer games on Steam earlier this year, and since it was a gift, I thought I might as well at least give it a try. Thankfully I found that they were awesome and the best Total War has been since Medieval 2 (I'm not into the setting of Shogun 2 sadly).

But as for my favourite games of all time, that would have to be Monolith's classic FPS, Blood or perhaps Age of Wonders III. Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is a recent strong contender. Warhammer 2 is awesome, but I don't know if I'd rate it as an all time classic. I can't think of any reason why not, I just don't feel that strongly about it somehow. Maybe that will change if they add Nagash who's been my hero since 4th edition in the early nineties. I still have the Undead "army book" from that period.

It's pretty great, no doubt.

over priced dlc siege battles are a joke and turn times are just horrible so NO.

What's the difference between setting up half an army on one side and another on another of a square wall compared to linear wall? You can do the same, set up one half on the left side and another on the right side. AI will have to split his forces too to defend both sides and distance is enough that those half armies don't interract with each other until they make it to the center. It's the same thing, just a little easier to control because if you zoom out you can see both left and right side.

Yeah, siege battles became more active compared to previous titles where you had to spend few turns on campaign map to build siege equipment and then some time on battle map while you bombard enemy fortifications without them being able to retaliate. Now you can attack on turn 1 and immediately advance instead of waiting. I don't see how this is a bad thing. Siege battles in warhammer are much better than in previous titles in my opinion.

The main thing that makes historical titles worse for me is the lifespan of leaders. I don't want my leader dying in the middle of the campaign.

Huge diversity of units and very different mechanics for each faction make TW:WH/TW:WH2 the best game out of TW series for me.

For me the most economical were mud Materia Magica and Marvel Puzzle Quest. Zero cost and 4400 hours for MM (on one character) and 2800 hours for MPQ before I reached usable final tier of characters and game became boring.

Rome 2 has been improved a lot later though. I think it's easily the best historical total war at the moment.

There were games which were pioneers for the genre and revolutionised it, but as far as pure quality and amount of content goes, WH2 beats them all. There is nothing which even comes close, especially if you count in mods. There might be people who are emotionally attached to other games, but as far as technical quality goes, there is no denying that it's the best.

It will be remembered as the best strategy game of its time and if TWWH3 does it properly, as the best strategy game ever made. Once all the DLCs and bugfixies are completed, it will most likely be the best game of all time.

Uhm no far from it, don't get me wrong I do like the game but is has no competitive aspect to it due to several balance issues in the game itself and by design. It is a great game to play alone or with friends but there are just better rts games and even other games that are better.

It is possibly best total war game, but not even close to being best game ever.Even tho i think game is Great. But there are decent amount of things that are not amazing:
1)Sieges are meh
2)Politics and diplomacy are non existent or meh
3)Tonns of small dlc instead of major expansions
4)0 improvements on 10 years old AI
5)Norska,WE,beastmen,chaos still underdeveloped
6)No servers for multiplayer games and decent amount of dsyncs and other issues
7)Same old campaign mechanics like public order and only 1 currency for all the factions(gold)
8)Agent spam for ages
9)Minor city battles
10)Gate Bug is still here
I am not even talking about Sega cash grap politics and u can make alot of other points on game flaws.

Not for me. It's good, but watered down for more focus on battles, and while battle variety is nice and all, it's lacking in all other departments. So it's neither "best game ever" nor "best total war game ever" for me, but then it's subjective so whatever) Still good

I've put 800 hours into this game. Doubt I have spent that much time in any other game that I've played over my 35 year gaming career :D

I was under the impression that we are talking about the best game... not the most perfectly designed game. Some people claim that Master of Magic is the best, but I guess I don't need to mention how buggy and extremely imbalanced it is. Or watch some speed runs in Half Life and how ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awful lot of glitches and other annoying stuff it has.

And also both those have a fraction of the content of wh2+mortal empires, and it only runs like ♥♥♥♥ if your computer isnt mid-high end
