Second place goes to morghur, because who DOESN't want free chaos spawn hordes?
However, managing a massive empire in mid-to-late game can feel like your just a comptroller for your faction; and it's at that point that I'll switch over to my Kholek Suneater campaign, smash some stuff up, then I'm good again for more management.
Oh and I should add that Kholek's campaign is massive amounts of fun; pun intended.
I've found I usually just quit my chaos campaigns early as they arn't that much fun. Being a mercenary for clan moulder can be interesting though.
Beastmen I find more fun than chaos but you might find it a bit terrifying if you're still having on normal. I think the ai is bugged or something aggression wise vs beastmen and you'll have swarms from the far end of the map chasing you straight into the chaos wastes en mass. I don't run into anything similar with chaos which is why I think it has to be a bug of some sort.
What's particularly funny is that you can tech and building up so you could potentially field what, 10+ armies? But you'll never have the cash to field more than two (not with real units in them) before you win the game (certainly on Vortex - even in a big slow ME game I'd be shocked if you could field more than 3, maybe 4 at the outside, before you'd won). So that's weird.
I do like the idea of the Defenders, and that mechanic works pretty well (instant 14-unit garrison with walls can hold off all but the most aggressive attackers even on VH where doomstacks are common), but overall I found him to be one of the less-fun hordes I played. Also the way it plays out, at least on VH, means you're likely to be doing a lot of battles with a Kroxigor-heavy army, which is fun to watch (death roll!!!!) but not exactly tactically complex or engaging gameplay-wise.
Personally I think most fun I've had as horde-based armies as been as either Warriors of Chaos - particularly Sigvald (who seems less OP/cheesy than Archaon/Kholek), or Beastmen with Malagor or Morghur. Sigvald is such a tremendous jerk that it makes him more fun, too, especially with one very notable quest battle speech.
As for the Vampire Coast, I feel like they have both the annoyances of fixed-place armies, and horde armies, so unless you want a complicated compromise, they're not the way to go. When I play a horde army, I want to be, y'know, a horde, not a dude with a bunch of cities to defend.
But playing a horde in Mortal Empire is like playing a wait-your-turn simulator.
Too bad there's only Nakai on Vortex. I personaly wasnt impressed at all.
Or even travel forward in time and partake in the skaven horde! (Please floaty ca voices from above)
