Dealing with late-game AI alliances
I'm playing as Khemri and have been expanding eastwards. I've now got the Last Defenders occupying the whole Lahmia region and could boot them out with ease, but they're allied with Dwarves and Empire. The auto-resolve calculations being what they are at the moment, the Empire has 86 provinces and the Dwarves around 30. They in turn are allied with Bretonnia. Same goes for the Knights of Origo and Thegan's Errantry on the far west of my continent.

How do you go about dealing with this? (Beyond paying your way into an alliance to satisfy the win conditions.) Can the AI ever be persuaded to break an alliance?

Yes, if chaos is gone, and they lose enemies, there's a great chance they declare war on another, if you're too strong in comparison to their target, other than that, just like they won't break one with you, if you're on great terms, they won't with the AI. You can also ask an enemy of the LD to invite you into the war and circumvent the alliance. Or you find a weaker ally of the LD, declare war on them and then don't have the others join. Example of this:

A Dwarf faction with only 1 province is allied to the LD but not to main Dwarfs, the LD are allies with the main Dwarfs, who are rank 2.

If you declare war on the 1 province Dwarf, the LD will join, but main Dwarfs won't (they'll still lose reputation with you the longer the war goes on of course. )

Do not "declare", "join"!
