It mostly depends on how much time you decide to dedicate to the game, and your attention to detail.

500 hours, though not in warhammer. Carried over from previous titles. Strategy itself was developed by a strategy game from the age of 8

I read a number of books about it when I was a teenager, and real-time strategy has always been my favorite genre.

It always interested me. What really got me into gaming was back when the first C&C game and warcraft: orcs and humans came out. Also I was 5 years in the army and had two tours in Afghanistan.

Im playing strategy games since 1991 and even they are all different, at some points its really easy to adapt new Features or gameplay styles.
Today i can buy a Strategy game and start playing. After the first few hours im fine. I didnt find a new Strategy game that was complicated since Sid mayers alpha centauri in a language i didnt understand really good.

Probably after about 100 hours of Shogun 1, combined with playing a lot of chess, and a lot of reading of historical (Bernard Cornwell) and fantastic (various) warfare books.

Actually, I'm sufficiently good at strategy to know I'm barely passable at strategy, in some niche environments.

Yeah I´m -not- good at it, I´m getting better, picking up new things every now and then, but it´s a long road ahead, but an entertaining one, littered with bodies! ^^

i dont get smarter in playing, but i get more knowledge on units, bonus, moral etc,, by exemple on campaign map, you need experience of a faction for get the perfect city balance build for religion/income/unit/trade...for vortex campaign i need often to reload for make a perfect counter to spawn and build city wall tier5....
in battle i learn also the tricks, ..but what i enjoy the most is in this game you dont a superior composition of army.....you have a large choice of different unit a tall tier,, a full canon/treb work, a full large work, a full ranged work...its same with lord you can build a beast melee lord, a big mage, or make him ride a deadly dragon/dino....or prefer to mae him stats support.
did you notice that many tier5 cavalry have a lower statistics than infantry tier4 and are less numerous, they are also useless vs large unit...yet, with skill, they are usefull for their charge and mobility....
i often take the hallebard top tier +few large+few arty it works for all, and specially for autoresult, high defense troops have lower casualties.
but hallberd are weak to a mass rang army...a good wood elve army can defeat chaos deadly infantry with ease

Getting good at strategy? Pah! Like, never. I'm good at making money, which nets me more men, which nets me more armies. You hardly need strategy when you outnumber the enemy to a point where tactics stop being a factor.

Read/listened to a bunch of military history content and while no expert the basic tactics of flanking, hammer and anvil, harassing enemy formations translate well into the basic representation of battle in tw games.

Always was decent at strategy, figuring out strengths and weaknesses and pattern recognition. But I'm better at reacting and creating luck for myself in fast paced situations. I became much better at implementing tactics in this game when I started using the more advanced controls and learnt how to use unit groupings better.

I have the most difficulty with infantry and the rock paper scissors aspect... getting my units to engage enemy units they have an overwhelming advantage against. Thankfully this can be mostly ignored in sp with constant hammer and anvil /cycle charges.
