So why aren't Wyverns a part of the Greenskins unit tree?
Since some of the Lords can ride Wyverns, I figured Wyverns would be a good Monster Unit for the Greenies.

The only way for an Orc to ride a Wyvern is to steal a Wyverm egg and hand-rear it to maturity, they are the most highly prized mounts within a Greenskin army, where only the most powerful Orc Warbosses or Great Shamans have the ability and unnatural bond to bind these cruel beast to his will.

What that has to do with fielding them as unmounted monsters?

Because they would just eat the orcs.

Isn't it the same about canasaurs? And I can't only assume star dragons too.

Yeah, I assume all 3 love orc meat.

Carnasurs are carefully tamed.

And Dragons are highly intelligent beings, and incredibly ancient. They only figh for the High Elves because they have an agreement with them.

Carnosaurs are trained to accept a rider and take direction, they are far from dull-witted creatures, unlike Wyverns who just do everything by instinct.

Also Wyverns are not actually dragons.

Again, OP isn't talking about tamed/mounted monsters!!! There are unmounted monsters in lots of rosters in the game. Even lizardmen put "feral" in front of a lot of their names.

Mounted or Unmounted, its the same animal, I'm aware of what he's saying but the principal is the same.

"Feral Wyverns" can't be tamed.

Orcs don't have any flying units except for lords/heroes. That was made for balance reasons in the tabletop, as well as to make the different armies feel uinique (vampires no ranged, skaven no mounted, orcs no flying, etc). Then they came up with a lore reason to justify it.

Carno's are likely bound through the slann or skink priests magic and natural bond with the creatures of lustria. HE also have a close bond with their dragons as well. Both these races lorewise are ancient, and have had time to prefect the means of taming and rearing these creatures, comparativly the greenskins are relativly young and not to mention are a barbarian race with harly any sort of technological advancement other than goblins crudly copying their enemies.

There was one example in lore where they released a few fearl drakes into altdof killing the emperor at the time, but that was a completely uncontrolled event with the orks simply assuming the drakes would go for the tasty humies rather then the tough stringy ork snacks.

Yes orks would benefit greatly from a flying unit but thats just the way it is right now.

An unmounted monster requires control to be of use to an army. For example

1) It can be intelligent in its own right like the dragons are

2) It can be smart enough and then trained to obey command during battle - eg carnisores

3) It can be near wild, but of a disposition that can be controlled to get a bonus. Wardogs charging ahead of trainers

4) It can be left fully wild and even enraged, but directed with general good accuracy and limited damage to friendlies - eg setting pigs on fire and having them charge at the enemy (esp elephant/cavalries).

Wyverns just don't fit into those niches. Their wings alone would require them to be crippled or bound to stop them just flying off; they are not smart enough to train to operate without a rider; they are not of a disposition to charge at the enemy. Hence why they appear in such small numbers and only with riders.

While we're on the topic... I've always wondered- I know that giants are bribed with booze to fight for the greenskins, and Wyverns are broken by their riders to their will... but how do the greenskins get trolls on their side? Do they give them beer too? Or do they just feed them what's left of their enemies?

Trolls commonly join marauding Greenskin armies in the hopes of finding a meal to feed their ravenous appetit. Greenskin tribes often "bribe" these Trolls to join their Waaagh!s, promising an opportunity to eat Humans, Dwarfs and their many other foes.
