Other than that; explore ruins, salvage shipwrecks on the seas, complete quests, that kind of thing. You're really going to have to scrape for it at the beginning of the game.
As for the AI always getting their rituals started before you, it's pretty obvious that the AI is working off of a set script, with a small random plus or minus five turns or something. It's clearly cheating. Which makes the uselessness of intervention armies all the more annoying.
Shipwrecks, mysterious islands and all the sites found at sea give fantastic bonuses. Try those.

Yea i got one of these as Skaven, except it was minus 50% weapon damge and it lasted for over 30 turns. It was almost impossible to win any battle with a debuff like that, autoresolve or otherwise.
