Performance and gameplay is affected, as in more units per squad and how they respond to magic abilities.

Medium is closest to TT and Large and Ultra are preferred.

so the gameplay will turn out different? and the whole campaign itself?

Its how many units per unit card. A medium saurus warriors will run 50 units, a large 75 and an ultra will have 100 units per card. its all scaled across all units. ultra will have larger battles

Gameplay will be affected, I guess you could say the campaign would be affected because the effects of magic attacks will be decreases. It's a negligible difference but does change the way you play.

I'd say to start on ultra if your pc can handle it and see if you like how magic works. Then jump to medium and you will feel the difference pretty quickly. You can do this in a quick custom battle.

I suggest you try it out in the different unit sizes and try to get a feel for the different settings.

I'd say yes medium makes things easier.

medium makes the game easier cause the magic attacks will wipe out more troops lets say, a stack of 60 on medium and a spell kills 50, or ultra where that same stack is 100 men now and your spell still only kills 50 your left to deal with 50 units instead of 10.

There is magic damage scaling now dependent on unit scale, so it shouldnt really have a big effect.

Is this in writing anywhere?

I'm trying to find the option for unit scaling, I must be blind because I can't see it in options or settings. I want large battles and to also see how big magic will play in the game with such large forces on the battlefield.

It's under the graphics settings advanced tab

Thanks.
Unit size does not affect gameplay balance wise. It's only purpose is to make the game run better on lower end computers, as on lower setting it will have less soldiers on screen.

It does affect gameplay in general, since more soldiers in a unit means battles tend to last longer.
