free mode?
Hello everybody,
I'm total war newbie ... (Shame on me: D)
I have the following question: is there a "free mode"? i.e. I can play a "free map" as in Classic Strategiegames. Example Grand Ages Medieval or can I only play the campaigns (linear clashing of battles) and single clashes (previously determined troops)? What about long-term games? I'm still very unsure about the purchase: / ...
Best regards

please rephrase what you mean by 'linear' and previously determined, and what you want. Do you want a Civ game basically?

What game do you think this is exactly? There's no linear campaigns in Total War, you can do more or less whatever you want. If you're unsure if it's a game for you just go check out their gameplay videos on their youtube channel.

thx guys! My fear was that this is a game in which one chash follows another without an "open" map and just with fix armies but I think I was wrong with that aint I?

Yeah you attack who you want and ally with whoever you want. There are only cutscenes if you do a ritual or something. It never pushes you to do anything though.

Edit: you also build what buildings you like and troops, nothing is decided for you.

The map as in the cities and geographical features are pre built and not randomly generated like a civ game.

You start with a fixed army depending on the lord you choose at start.

That being said once the campaign starts you can build the buildings in the cities how you want. You can attack and capture or raze the cities you want and build the armies you want.

So its a sandbox within a certain frame.

Although it has always been an open map. In total war 1 some of the campaigns were fairly linear, dwarves for example and to a lesser extent orcs. In total war 2 that seems to have been done away with entirely, you can now not only attack where you want but also settle in any terrain. There are penalities to settling in certain terrains that need to be overcome, depending on the race.

You wanted a sandbox like, right? Then TW series is exactly what you were looking for.
