The lore is fantastic, the gameplay isn't that complicated once you get rolling.
If your new to total war in general, you might find gthe genre unusual, but a few hours in game will fix it for you, tutorials have always been a part of total war but they did An exceptional one this time round.
Best thing I'd recommend is go pick up medieval 2 or shogun 2 for a refined taste of total war at a budget price, then if you enjoy those, give warhammer a try.
This is pretty basic in terms of strategy games, not much brainpower needed.

You do not need to play the first one as it is the same style game being Total War, it just has additional armies which can be played. Soon there will be an update which will have a giant map where every army will be placed and if you own them (owning warhammer 1 and the dlc's ) you will be able to play any you want. If you only own warhammer 2 you will still be able to play the grand campaign but will be limited to High Elves, Dark Elves, Skaven and Lizardmen.
I had never played a Total War game before and Warhammer 1 was my first. It took a while and im still learning with coutnless hours under my belt. If you like the game and the fantasy style then it will keep you coming back for more so you will finally win a full game :) .
There are also plenty of youtube videos explaining how to play and usefull tactics for combat. I liked PartyElite's guides:

The guides helped me diversify my army and not simply go what looked cool. You will need to think very strategically with some armies such as Skaven. As they are quite weak head to head you wont be able to simply smash your way through like Lizardmen. Instead you'll need to make use of their swarm like army and take advantage of their artillery and speciaslist units.
I reckon you should watch a few gameplay videos to see what its like and if you're happy with what you see go ahead and grab the game. You will be able to finish the tutorial and the start of a campaign within the 2 hour refund period. If you like it keep it, if not simply refund the game. Just make sure you have played less than 2 hours and have not owned it more than 2 weeks.

Hope this helps.
