I usally have spearmen and elites/swordsmen mixed in the front (playing the campaign) plus spear/halberds on the sides to prevent cavalry incursions.
Or if you are facing heavy infantry armies like dwarf, greataxes.
Lots of neighbours with monsters/chargers/cavalry, go spears. Want your frontline to murder enemy infantry? Go swords or great weapons.
Spears are excellent units to hold the enemy while another unit goes to work to murder them or to intercept cavalry or monsters before they can bend your archers over and plunder their butt booty.
Swords are the ones you want if you want your frontline to take other units apart. They're more flexible on the offense because any unit that isn't holding an enemy at bay can maneuver around and smack into their flanks or backs to deal satisfying damage - most spear units aren't really dangerous even if they do flank or backstab.
On an offensive you want your spearmen on your flanks since they have pretty terrible charge bonuses, unless you see a large unit you can have them engage.
With most Factions i play i dont use Spear or Sword units after the first 50 Turns.
Yes pretty much with WE Treekin with a life mage are all you need for a Frontline. Insanely powerful
And then Charge the enemys back with 5 Wild Riders and 1 Sister. = Win :)
Front line: Skeletons(8)
Flank/rear guard: Skeleton Spearman (3)
Flying formations: Fell Bats(3) andVargheists(3)
It works well in the field and decent in a seige. Does not work well with large amounts of cavalry, skirmisher units.
