Improved formations/battle control??
The most frustrating thing about the first game is the controls. Especially as a new player, nothing felt intuitive when you would set up your army in formation and then do the simplest thing to get them to move forward (drag a box around all of them and right click ahead) and it just ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up everything you set up, your lovely formation is now a rabble.

I don't really know what they could do but ♥♥♥♥ TWW is frustrating to play as a new player

wait what? maybe try this... select units you would like to move -> press and hold "alt" -> click and hold LMB and drag selected units where you want.
or
use "lock" formation (little padlock above selected group of units)

The holding alt command would work great if it preserved formation. Currently there must be some kind of bug because it keeps changing position of some units and making them overlap.

Then you're trying to cram your formation into an area that's too small for them.

Shift (or ctrl, i forget) G with a group of units will put them in a group and lock their formation.

Control groups, a staple of strategy games for quite a while (To the extent most strategy games don't mention them) lock units into hotkeys. So, it's the 1-0 above your keyboard (Not the numberpad), and ctrl to lock a unit into a control group. This successfully tells all your units that when you press that button (1 for instance) you pick and order all of them. After that, the game puts a little flag over their flags saying '1', '2' or whatever control group they're in. If you then click the lock symbol next to this flag, they'll maintain their current formation when you give them orders to the best of their abilities.

Yes, this is a thing the game should tutorialize better. So should Starcraft 2. So should warcraft 3, so should DOTA 2. Nobody ever explains they include this particular thing until some old foagie or youtube video explains it.

edit: I missed a beat on the explaining this. If you hold ctrl while clicking two units, you pick those two units, you can do this up to as many as you like. If you hold shift while doing so, it instead picks every unit -between- those two units. This also works this way on the battlemap.

edit2: Added the word battle to map to edit 1 for clarity. I should not type tutorials when I'm trying to flip sleep schedule around.

I LIVE AGAIN Aug 13, 2017 @ 1:40pm
I've never played Total War series and got into controls in about 2 hours of gameplay.

People learn at different speeds, and that's okay. Some people just require... a bit more help.

the little lock icon above the unit cards is your friend!
no more breaking formation, you can rotate, move and scroll all you like!

CA shot themself in the foot by providing zero information for army managment in the tutorial campaigns. i remember when they gave the game to a bunch of streamers and they had no clue whatsoever how to move armies. they moved their army in a single line and then they paused and selected each unit to attack an other individual unit infront of them when you could do the same with one or two clicks. it was so painful to watch.
the game is so much more enjoyable when you learn and get used to the advanced controls.

you did the right thing in pointing this out as a new player and you will see how much better the game will get after wachting those videos.
cheers
