If you want Steam OS for PC, just install Manjaro Linux KDE Plasma (basically the same, it's Arch Linux like Steam OS) install Steam and then put into big picture mode!

For somebody totally new to a Linux based OS who is coming from a Windows gaming based OS I would have to say BAZZITE

I have used a Windows based OS for over 26 years, in those 26 years I tried many distro's along with the original SteamOS.

All of the distro's I tried in probs 16 years of the 26 years failed as a viable game option to replace windows OS as my gaming OS
Linux was way to complicated for the average windows user, even installing something simple in windows like video drivers was a nightmare in Linux and 9-10 times I ended up "oh I've broken the OS again".

The original SteamOS came close but I just didn't have many games and the ones I did have that worked had poor performance so it put me off.

Fast forward to now and Holy Molly have things come on in leaps and bounds, I honestly never thought I would really see the day I could use a Linux based OS for my main gaming and entertainment system because Linux was far to complicated to deal with.

With the help of Microsoft's AI it and it alone (lol) in one simple reply advised me to try Bazzite

So if your thinking of trying Linux for your gaming needs and you don't want the hassle of having to set everything up then look no further than Bazzite.

Everything is pre-configured, If your PC has the spec's to run it then I would advise you to try Bazzite before any other distro, just because it's so easy to just start playing games.

If it can replace windows as a gaming platform for someone like myself who was a dedicated windows PC gamer for 26 years then I'm sure others would be surprised how good Fedora 41 has been pre-tuned in the Bazzite distro
For gamer's who are trying to move out of an windows gaming OS for what ever reason Bazzite should be your first taste of freedom.

I've already got a Steam Deck as of this Christmas, my problem now is that I'm going to be needing a new OS for my PC since MS support for W10 is ending soon.
I do NOT want to use W11 ever, if possible, I do NOT trust Recall nor do I want to be constantly bombarded by pleas to use their "marvelous" (aka worthless) AI copilot stuff.
SteamOS doesn't do that. SteamOS is also Linux-based. I want to use the same version of SteamOS on my gaming PC that I already have, as I am using on the Steam Deck, if only so that I can get a break from feeling like every single thing that has transistors in it is trying to sell me an AI product that I am morally opposed to using.
Pick a Linux distro that has support for your hardware (Ubuntu, Mint, and Pop!OS are all good general candidates) and then install Steam from the repo. Steam gaming on Mint 22 is pretty solid, with Proton doing the heavy lifting on OS compatability, just like on the Steam Deck.

Maybe develop an all in consumer friendly alternative to windows? Microsoft is handing you a golden opportunity with it's scummy Orwellian Win11 OS.

Even if windows recalls "Recall", they tested the water, and its clear thats because absolute exploitation of the consumer is what they want. The world needs better.

Desktop SteamOS sounds fine and hopefully it'll happen at some point, but I don't get why there's such a demand for it.

Install Linux Mint or some other big distro, throw Steam on there, and you've basically got that + a PC that doesn't shove your data into some insecure cloud service.

as a steam deck user. i hate the steam os.
bloatware in gaming mode sooo you do desktop mode for far better quality and battery life. all around janky mess.
cant find help online for all the problems i run into.
reason the steam deck/ steam OS CANT be reviewed on steam

That's not a thing on SteamOS. Games perform worse in Desktop mode than gaming mode, which of course effect battery life, too. It's a dual boot OS

Either you gotta reinstall SteamOS (bcuz malfunctioning), this is a troll, or you're just stupid and should stay on console. Consoles are designed for little kids anyways

The majority is ignorant. I'm certain the overwhelming majority of them never heard of Linux until SteamOS. Naturally they'd want SteamOS instead of some other random Linux distro that looks 'intimidating'

But for erryone else, it's the "Gaming Mode" dual boot feature alone that makes us want it above all else. It performs way better than desktop mode

The only other somewhat decent option is Bazzite, which sought to replicate it. A temporary alt until SteamOS is officially released for generic hardware

Please give us SteamOS for PCs. Preferably before Oct 14th of 2025. Already plan to use Linux on my laptop. Just need something to play my steam games on main PC.

Im not entirely sure about the bloatware or battery life being worse in game mode - as you can have very fine control in managing your TDP and GPU Clock to be as low as 5W in game mode and it doesnt load the desktop component(?) so there should be more resources avaliable for it in Game Mode.

As for janky, any OS will have bugs/quirks and issues - not even Windows is immune to have those. Its funny how Proton can run older games better than Windows 11 But I think for me what I do enjoy while using SteamOS on my Steam Deck was that I never had to go, 'oh great, another graphics card driver update' or I wonder what the Windows update will do.

I do hope that once SteamOS becomes mainstream that more developers reconsider and be more open and do more to battle cheats without barring a whole ecosystem because its just easier to take the shortcut to a solution than a genuine long term solution that doesnt impact buying customers from accessing their product (i'm looking at you T2/R* for GTAV Online).

Why I would recommend Bazzite-deck is because it works so well on Desktop (if you have an AMD RDNA 1 or 2 graphics card)

in deck mode (AMD GPU's ONLY) all the games I played on windows 11 work on bazzite-deck and run better, crazzy I know but that's how it worked out for my setup.

Not only that Bazzite-deck gives you a good idea of what SteamOS3 will be like on a desktop and to be honest I'm happy to stick with bazzite, now i have been using it for a week or so.
I even learned (it was easy) how to install stuff in desktop mode using Lutris (never heard of it before) to install battlenet to play Diablo II remake.
Again the game runs a lot better than it did on windows 11 everything just runs smoother don't ask me why? i have no idea but it's been a better gaming experience.

so for people to be worried about trying Bazzite-deck I can assure you it been fine and easy to adapt to coming from Windows 11 home.

I have over 130 games with steam I have tested around 51 of them, so far I have only had an issue with 1 of them not launching, it just sits there saying updating some file, which to be fair i had that happen on windows 11 a few times.

As someone that migrated to Arch on all my computers, this makes me happy.
I got tired of A.I and Recall being integrated not to mention, all the problems with 24H2.

My Legion 7 (All AMD hardware) served as a platform to test distros and to find something that doesn't get in the way of itself. It was a eye opening experience.
My use case was simple, I play a ton of fighting games. I need something that's easy to swap controllers and sticks, all the while, being displayed over HDMI.

If you have the will power and like to learn things, go give Linux a try.
