jesus the bar has been lowered over the years. remember the days when PC releases were far less frequent, but they were actually GOOD when they came out? i miss the 90's.

There were plenty of bad games releasing in the 90's, though. The internet and gaming in general just wasn't as big of a deal so you didn't hear about them, and they mostly sat on the shelves at Wal-Mart, Target, Circuit City, and Best Buy without any advertisement.

It's possible retailers are just choosing not to carry them. Steam does offer games that aren't rated by the ESRB, games rated "AO" by ESRB, and unrated games containing Adult Only Sexual Content. All of these may make Steam undesirable for retailers.

These are still available for purchase, at least here. I saw these again - but not accessible because of COVID-19 counter-measurements - in a big mediamarket store two weeks ago.

It really depends of the store owner to offer these or not.
