the basics are:
-1 XP per Vek life point.
-Artificial/Cor pilots dont gain XP.
in this link you can havbe the full details about pilots, but be aware the article contain some secrets of the game so SPOILER ALERT:
https://intothebreach.gamepedia.com/Pilots
One thing you need to understand:
Pilots are NOT necessary to control de mechs, theyre simple passive abilities.
Of course you want those abilities but dont think your run is over cause you lose a pilot.
Through the game is very commom have to sacrifice some mechs for the sake of the grid.
And you every once in a while will got a pod with a real pilot in it.
1. use / discard pilots at will most are not usable as you require power. This is something i just dont get or find with the exception is the 1 per run i get from pods (big deal). Cannot for the life of me work out the mech upgrade path is for without power!
2. spend the end of island bonus on grid.
3. the different unit types are nice no idea where the coins come from though.
I think you get the same problem as me when i first start playing the game. Going for kills and having a hard time to get a single clue of what im dealing with.
Im honestly don’t comprehend the Nº1 item in your list but,
By leveling up your pilots they get abilities that will help you through the runs, such as mechs being able to move over units, granted shield etc. Most of those abilities come with the pilot without any need of power cores BUT they need to be unlock by gaining XP.
Some tips:
Rather than eliminate the Veks, your main objective is (1) defend the buildings and (2) prevent other Veks to be respawed. Stall the game, don’t go for unnecessary kills.
In the islands, each section have objectives that give stars, grid power or power cores, sometimes they give all of then, so choose the sections for the item you most need at that moment.
If you having trouble to maintain you grid power and is spending every bonus on it, probably cause you are failing in keep the first tip. Remember ItB have reactive premise. You’re always responding to the Veks reaction not the other way around.
And last, the coins are granted accomplish challenges, each unit have 3 of them that you can see just by selecting the unit (the squares above) + non unit related challenges. If you enter in the units selction menu theres an option for you to see all challenges available.
