If you've played FTL, here's how (IMO) type A ships compare to ItB squads:
Kestrel - Rift Walkers
Federation - Rusting Hulks
Engi - Steel Judoka
Zoltan - Blitzkrieg
Rock - Flame Behemoths
Mantis - Hazardous Mechs
Slug - Frozen Titans
Stealth - Zenith Guard
Rift walkers is standart
Hazardous mechs is one of the 2 DPS squads...at first it seems subpar but once you learn that mechs cant drop below 0 hp and that the healing applies before death(aslong you kill something with your shot the selfdmg can,t kill you) it becomes decent.
Zenith guard is the other DPS squad-very fun to play and strong but make sure to bring the armor pilot for the vehicle
Steel Judoka sucks-they have no dmg on their own(aim to make vek kill each other)and very specific position manipulation that makes it very hard to execute their gameplan.(flame behemoths can make enemys attack each other more efficiently while it is not that much about it :/ )
Blitz is fun and unique but quite bad. They can do large chain attacks(make sure to use your armored vehicle as link) but have little position manipulation and singletarget dmg and can,t do any missions that involve unit objectives(tanks, robots)
Frozen titans is a very basic squad. It is a bit weak unless you pick the pilot that gives you a shield...with your artillery nolonger freezing itself it becomes one of the most powerfull squads in the game(the artillery with that pilot is REALY broken)
Rusting hulks has decent dmg and very decent control....one of the topdogs
The secret squad is fun but not very good
If i were to make a tierlist
1:frozen titans(with the shield pilot)
2:Rusting Hulks
3:Flame behemoths
4:hazardous mechs
5:Zenith guard(with the armor pilot)
6:Riftwalkers
7:secret squad
8:Blitz
9:Steel judoka
I like the default team as well. Everyone else I am kinda iffy about.
Of course luck with upgrade choices, time pods and pilot skills plays a big role in this game so tier lists are often very subjective (sometimes there are only mech reactors in time pods and sometimes there is a pilot or an upgrade as well).
If you didn't have any problems winning with a certain squad you tend to rate it higher but it might have been pure luck.
Flame Behemoths are actually one of the worst predefined squads in this game since you often can't get the perfect island reward, no matter how good you play.
IMO the secret squad ist the worst squad overall. Upgrading is harder and there is no custom pilot.
Flame Behemoths are very difficult to play because they lack almost all raw damage. However they have pretty good displacement of enemies, and the swap mech is potentially one of the most powerful mechs in the game being able to swap spaces with anything within a 4 tile radius, with flying.
You also need to take advantage of the flamethrower mech being able to do direct damage to targets already on fire, as well as generally making the most of the fire DoT, making getting fire onto spawning tiles or otherwise making sure everyone is on fire ASAP is usually your priority.
They are definitely not my favorite, I didn't expect to win with them because I didn't think they were that goodafter having a bad losing streak with them. They suck at doing mission objectives, and it was a rough ride the entire game. Somehow I managed to finish all 4 islands and beat the game for the first time with them though, so that was something.
I much prefer other teams.
Also I liked Frozen Titans, but freezing yourself can be danegrous sometimes. Blitzkrieg comes after, and then Rift Walkers.
I seem to go against the crowd with Rust Hulks: the ability of the flying brute was sometimes cumbersome: more often than not when i used it one turn, i found myself regretting it the next as it blocked my ability to displace ennemys or simply to fire. OK its powerful to prevent ennemys from shooting but it limits your possibilities in the late turns.
