Origin of the Vek?
So what we do know is, the world's oceans have risen and flooded out the majority of habitable land. The 4 islands are controlled by corporations that don't seem to care much for the environment except Archive. Detritus was devoted to waste removal and recycling but seems to have no problems polluting the land with toxic filth to fight the Vek.

RST well... they don't care about anything not even their own land if it will stop the Vek.
Pinnacle is an example of humanity relying too much on AI and the AI getting out of control and posing a hazard to their creators.

Based on all of this, my guess is that the Vek are mutated insects likely caused from pollution and radiation due to the neglect humanity had for the planet.

Any other theories? They aren't referred to as aliens by anyone in the game.

Vek spelled backwards is Kev, and Kev is short for Kevin, and I know a Kevin who is an actor but really a waiter at a downtown restauraunt because he can't get any roles. He should try dressing up as a giant insect!

I have and it sheds a lot of interesting theories regarding the pilot dialogues and the CEOs. I just didn't see an actual hypothesis about the origin of the Vek here. But it's still an awesome read.

For humanity's future to have existed even once, the Vek must never have invaded. Therefore I believe that the Vek are actually a race of insects from the future who were accidentally sent back into the past, most likely due to some corporate horsing around. Having realised they had sent them to a time when humanity were incapable of fighting them unaided, the mechs were forced to follow them back to correct the mistake and save the future.

Damn, that WAS lame. Usually, I'm sharper than that. ITB reminds me very strongly of Chroma Squad, and my answer would fit very well in that universe.

Personlly i think that the veks origin is heavyly tied to the the secret squad, for example whats surspisius to me is that their discribed as "humanity's last hope" which could implie several things,

1.Breach tech isnt as advanced or powerful in their timeline (short jumps only)
Possiblely issacs theory of the breach is correct and the event that sparks the
abitlity for larger breachs is the use of the bomb at the last stand

2. The secret squad wasnt men't to fight the vek origanly no other squad is said to be the last
hope of humanity nor does it explicly say that they were made to fight the vek

Some other Points of interest

1. What does the bomb at the last stand even do, i mean it makes a huge explosion but its
useing breach tech possibly sending the vek or at least a small amount of them elsewhere
rather than outright killing them

2. The secret squad are cyborgs, if they are somehow the souce of all vek, it would explain the
veks effect on the pinnacle robots (one can even end up as a hive leader)

3. Like i said above they are cyborgs which means their are at least 2 ways i can think of that
they were created, ether made by pinnacle as they would be the only ones who would have
the tech requied to both outfit them as cyborgs, and capture them for conversion (ice tank)
or that they were grown but im not sure they would have the time to do so
(if they were made to fight the vek)

4. On the last stand one of my mech pilots commented that the vek hive had been below the
ocean and was only revealed when the oceans shifted and since no vek can swim that
would imply that they have been underground most likely trapped untill the oceans shift

5. Vek may feed off energy somehow it would explain their attacks on the grid somewhat

Well thats all i can think of now thought of most of this yesterday by myself and thought i
should post it somewhere i guess here will do so enjoy

I stopped reading as soon as you mentioned the secret squad, I'm saving that as a surprise. Spoiler tags perhaps?

Specifically the secret squad.
There's nothing else that can be spoiled.
