Train Shielding Issue
I've just had a protect-the-train battle in which the following situation happened:

The train was under attack from a Burrower across its entire lenght, so I thought about shielding the train, something I never did before. To my surprise the shield enveloped the entire train, spanning across two entire tiles, so I thought that the train was safe and followed to attack other Vek with my other mechs.
When the Burrower attacked, the train still suffered damage, losing me a star and a perfect island.

Now, after considering what happened, and considering the following obviously true statements:
the Train is considered as a single object, although it spans along multiple tiles;
the shield will sustain only one hit, regardless the fact it spans across multiple tiles.
I must conclude that:
the Burrower's attack is not counted as a single attack that spans across three tiles, but as a series of three single attacks.

No doubt that this particular interaction is somewhat an extreme case, but still I consider this an issue since the game itself doesn't clarify this particular mechanic.

In this regard it would be nice having as a menu option a bestiary with a more extensive (more than the small window that briefly shows a Vek's stats) a game stat description of all Vek, each unlocked after you as encounter or kill them (like a Pokédex); it would also give the chance to add a bit deeper official lore to the game, which I'm sure people would love.

The Train's shield is only counted as one shield for both tiles, because it's all one entity. An attack on three tiles is considered three separate attacks, one for each tile. The shield absorbed one attack on one tile, which leaves the train exposed to a second attack on a second tile.

I came across a similar issue with an Alpha Crab, which has a two-by-one tile attack pattern, three damage each. The shield blocked for the first tile, vanished, then the train ate the second hit on the second tile.

If I remember correctly what I saw when it happened to me with an alpha hornet, when you mouse over the enemy, it does show that the train will lose HP.

(if I remember wrong and it doesn't, it's definitely something the devs should do, because it can indeed be misleading)

You got it exactly right, you can tell if you shield a train and two enemies attack each tile (happened to me). It's an extreme case not covered at all by the games otherwise very helpful tooltips.
