A mountain got destroyed and a character on my team commented on detecting something in the rubble and there was a little yellow orb glowing in the rubble.
I picked up the orb and a pod dropped from the sky. I didn't actually have time to collect the pod but it didn't get destroyed and that counts just like with the time pods.
I'm not sure what the odds are that you actually find the orb in a mountain though, you'll just have to keep breaking mountains until it drops.
Twice now a damaged mountain's glowed, and then if you destroy it and collect the orb, a different pod will drop. I've gotten two characters this way, both of which are homage to FTL's races.
Not sure about the second time, but it was *definitely* on Detritus.
I got the mantis in Archive, though. I guess it's just a mountain thing.
As I said, for me the rock/mountain was already damaged at the start of the mission, had only 1HP instead of the normal 2 and you could see a faint glow through the cracks, so it is easy to spot if you just keep looking at the mountains from now on.
This is the glow you are looking for, note the bottom left mountain has a yellow dot.

And the beacon, which must be manually picked up before the mission ends or the pod won't appear!
