What is the deal with the rusty sword ?
Every time I go to the forum of the game, I see a topic about someone who isn't happy with the random weapon upgrade and wants to play with the rusty sword.

Except the rusty sword is objectively inferior to all the weapons available, because it was designed that way.
So I am genuinely asking this : why do you want the rusty sword that much ? It sucks !

There are several reasons, actually.

- Challenge-runs
- "What? There's nothing wrong with these..." achievement
- Some just like the feel of the weapon
- Some other weapons are objectively weaker than the rusty sword, prior to upgrading their damage

Just dropping the rusty sword, starter bow and shield in that puddle under the platform below your spawn after you've bought the random-starter upgrades wouldn't hurt.

Those people use a fresh save with no upgrades at all. . .

Only legitamate reason.

It's the same as frantic sword, oiled sword, etc. but just worse.

That's just flat out untrue.

The Electric whip for one is weaker than the rusty sword by almost half. Just started the game and found that out.

The electric whip is a ranged weapon. Also lower damage doesn't make something objectively worse. The bow and inifinite arrows has less damage than an infantry bow, but is can fire infinetly, which the infantry can't.

Rusty sword does litterally nothing frantic sword doesn't, and it deals less damage than the frantic sword's NON-crit damage. Frantic is litteraly just a straight upgrade even if you never crit. Oil sword is also basically the same, but again more damage, and it spreads oil.

The closest thing to a Rusty Sword in terms of "feel" is the Balanced Blade. Blood/Oiled/Frantic swords all have longer wind ups. Rusty Sword's attacks are alot faster.

Personally, i much prefer the Rusty Sword, than rolling a Cursed Blade or Electric Whip (this one hits like a wet biscuit at LV1). Even wouldn't trade it for a Blood Sword prior to the +10% DMG upgrade.

Most importantly, there's no drawback to having the option to use your trusty, Rusty Sword instead at the start of a run.

Blood sword is much faster. . . Only oiled is significantly slower, frantic is roughly the same.

With stuff like the Cursed sword around, it's hardly objectively worse then every weapon. Not everyone wants to die in one hit... :P

That and it beats having to use some weapons, like Valmont's Whip. Never bad as a fallback weapon in case your starter weapons suck even more. And with the achievement they added there's practically no reason for them to not add them back for those who chose the random weapon "upgrades".

One simply SHOULDN'T have to make a new save just for the achievement or personal challenge runs. Now, if only they bothered adding them back, wouldn't even be that hard... Maybe somewhere in the starting area, or already on the player's inventory, or having a recycle attempt on the random starter items change them into the default equipment instead (rather then being unsellable junk...

It isn't so much objectively worse than every weapon, as it is objectively worse than every sword except cursed. That is still a large portion of the weapons. Also, what I said was that nothing was objectively worse that the rusty sword, which is true.

My opinion on the rusty sword:

Personally I think it is an excelent weapon in the first few levels. Yes there are similar swords that are better, but the main argument is of control. Before the random melee weapons upgrade, you are guaranteed the rusty sword. Afterwards, it is taken away and replaced with a chance at a similar weapon. If you prefer a sword and you get a whip, you can no longer choose to stick with the default. That is why I would like to still have it as an option, like just starting with it and then being able to swap it out if you want.

Worse wasn't the argument. Weaker ws the word used. And I prefer the Rusty sword to a few different weapons because it is a better choice for my play style.

Because it feels weird after getting random weapon "perk" you start the game with no weapon and let say you are to lazy to pick up the starter ones...you are basically defenseless from now for the rest of the game (well almost, you can still harm mobs from high jump+crouch attacks). I know it sounds a little bit exaggerated and improbable but look for example for Dark Souls even if you decide to not pick up any weapons you can still fight with your fists.

I should kill the watcher with only dive attacks and no weapons or skills. . .

That sounds like the beginning of the first Dead Cells legend, Flargliklarfglikarf The Brave, slew The Watcher of The Insufferable Crypt with nothing but diving atacks.

Nope, died about 2/3 the way through incomplete, a little after taking this.

It is really hard to get used to that, you tend to bounce off him while diving, so what you have to do is roll on top of him and then dive.
