Does a merged living quarters do anything extra?
It seems like a bigger space for 2 people, but does it increase birthrate?

It increases the population cap and allows for more dwellers to be in the room at once. Nothing more.

With a fully merged living quarters. You can put 3 females with 1 male. Then go do other vault things. This way you don't have to swap them out all the time. Minor time saver.

I've noticed that merging rooms and leveling them to 3 caused huge amounts of rad scorpions, it forced me to start over merging two rooms max and never leveling them.

I'd say it's not worth it, just build more.

So what is the benefit of merging 2 living quarters over having 2 separate living quarters? I can put 2 females with 1 male? I need to swap in a fresh female after one gives birth?
1. makes moving settlers around easier
2. makes lvling up rooms easier as you click less buttons
3. less cluttered rooms
4. it looks more organized and visually pleasing
5. if you have a living quaters or diner merged into one room from 3 rooms, you can add themes once you craft and unlock them.
