At least that is what i discovered in my last 3 games where i extensively engineered Uber babies.
The game is supposed to automatically give children the last name of their opposite sexed parent, but that doesn't always seem to happen. If you want to make things easier on yourself, always check family names for babies and change them as needed.
I also like to use middle names for generations. I do this byu changing either the first or last name to two names, such as Jeremy A Lord (1st generation) or Carla C Lord (3rd generation). It helps me track parentage, but it probably more than most people care about.
