Merging rooms
I am very new to this game so I am still in the "learning" stage. I like to do plenty of research via you-tube and discussions in order to maximize my time and effort in a game, rather than alot of trial and error and rebuilding.
I have seen dozens of videos which claim to be "perfect vault" builds. Some are very organized and built strategically, placing power rooms at the top, where others have been completely random builds where the layout makes no sense, rooms placed just "wherever" throughout the vault.
I have designed my Vault using the same basic layout as seen in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-YyEGIHcNc

To me, this layout makes sense, however I noticed that he has made his med bays and science labs 3 wide, which has come to my attention, might not be efficient.

I was reading a FAQ which stated:
"Almost all rooms are more efficient at 3 wide compared to 1 or 2 wide. The only exceptions are medbays and science labs, where the production per tile is most efficient at 2 wide. Also for medbays and science labs, storage is the same per room tile (10 each) regardless of how wide the room is or how upgraded it is. For both of these reasons, since per floor you can only fit two 3 wides and one 2 wide, it's efficient to make the 2 wides on you floors medbays and science labs."

So the point of this thread... Am I losing productivity or wasting space by making med bays and science labs 3 wide ? (Trying to determine which rooms /facilities to use in the 2-wide sections of vault)

Trust me, there's plenty of space to build stuff, especially if you convert and upgrade your resource rooms later on. I generally make my training rooms the 2 wide rooms as the time it takes to improve a stat is based on the level of the room and the stat value itself.

Of course, if you have the elevators on the sides of the vault, you could alternate 2 wide med bays and science labs across the entire floor.

Size of training rooms also do matter a bit.

I use 3 wide production rooms, but only tier 2, not tier 3 ; with high Int & Luck so they can rush as often as needed.
If a radscorpian spawns in a t2 room, it is much easier to kill. And only 1 of each in the upper levels along with resource prpduction & the floor they are on also has a Mr. Handy.

All my other 'storage' medays & science labs are down below in my seperated strorage wing to limit the spread of most negatice base incursions.

but thats jsut me :steamhappy:

Actually, it's the number of people in the room that matters, not it's size. A lone person in a 3 wide room will take a little longer to train up than an identical dweller in a single wide room with a training partner. I did find a formula for calculating the time on one of the wiki's, and while training partners do reduce the time, it's not by much.

Size should be in that wiki too. Also try redditors FAQ.
