AMAZING AND PRETTY DAMN FUN! people told me than this was the weakest entry to the "Ys" games, if this is considered the "weakest" entry, then Ys must be something special.

if anyone is looking for the story order with Ys games released in NA? it is----

Celceta: A great port of the Vita game. One of the modern Ys games, however unlike the other modern ones where you have full control, Celceta pushes your attacks towards enemies even when you have lock on off. So you have to plan your attacks more. Story revolves around Adol barely escaping the forest alive and losing his memory in the process after being badly hurt.

Each character has their moveset but they all fall under three play styles. attack, pierce, and break. depending on your formation, it will give you one of two party buffs. Dogi is sadly not in this one and instead we get a bootleg Dogi. Duren is one of Adol's companions from Ys 1-2. He is the laughing stock of the party and everyone makes fun of him. Thanks to various dialogue options, you can too! WONDERFUL!

The dialogue choices are completely meaningless and often don't even change the conversations. Except the funny ones. Those give slight alterations but then quickly go back to the same thing. The choices felt rushed and pointless.

Exploration is encouraged as there is items and equipment that are optional but extremely help your adventure along the way. You WONT need to really worry about keeping your entire squad balanced in levels as there is only one time they partially get separated, one by one, at the very end of the game. However if you just control Adol during that segment, it really doesn't matter what the other levels are for the characters you don't like.

Music-7.5/10 (still really good music though)
Combat-6.5/10 (fun but auto push at enemies can get you hurt or killed if you aren't careful)
Characters-8/10 (very good but not as good as other Ys games, especially with missing Dogi)
Plot-5/10- (this one is more about exploring than story. It has one, but not the strongest of the Ys games)

Overall rating---7/10. Well worth a single playthrough at least. Especially if you want all the lore of the Ys games and to experience each one. Could be better but definitely not a bad game by any means.

Make sure you kick Duren's ass (side quest in Karna's village) and insult him at every turn. He needs to know his place. Off screen. Dogi cannot be replaced by this fool.

Today i write to you a review about Ys IV: Memories of Celceta. According to forum posts, this game is based on the Mask of the Sun version of the game. Unlike the previous entries in the Ys series, this one has alot of changes going for it that previous games did not. There is now the ability to have a party and control party members, the ability to refine weapons and make them stronger, the ability to find items and resources to make them stronger by exchanging them for better items, and so much more has changed since Ys 3.

If your playing this game in order, this is technically the 4th game in the series. This is not timewise though, nor is it canon order. This game came out much later, in fact it came out quite a bit after the 6th game in the series even. Anyways, here is my pro/con list:

PROS:

- An expanded party with ability to control and switch between party members when controlling them. Ys seven also features the same game mechanics if your playing in cannoncial order.
- The ability to refine equipment in the game, and find resources to upgrade them.
- The great music, which is also found in previous entries of this series.
- Lots of sidequests and even area's to explore off the beaten path.
- Great story for this game.
- Unlockable time trial and harder modes after beating game once.

CONS

- Some of the items and quest items are hard to find sometimes and not really directed to where you find them.
- Mapping is one of the more difficult things to do in the game, and even missing one square inch will make it so you don't get the mapping achievment.
- Having the configuration load everytime when you load up the game can get annoying after awhile. At first, i did not even know it was normal until someone told me it is on the forums.


I really recommend this game if your a fan of the other Ys games, but be aware, there are alot of changes graphic wise and party wise in this game compared to earlier entries into the series.



NOTE: At the time of this writing, Ys 5 has not been released. If you are playing the games in order on pc, you should play YS 6: The Ark of Napishtim next.

Falcom game ported by XSeed. Can't be bad. History tells us so.

Played this a few hours so far. Played all Ys games since Turbografx Ys book 1 and 2

First off, lets get the port out of the way - so far I have had no problems at all, even in 4k. I had Ys 8 day 1 which had many issues, and this suffers from none of the problems that plagued that game on day 1. The game looks pretty nice in 4k, especially the distant scenery. Some of the character faces, UI and static screens don't scale well but the actual game play looks very nice given it's an older port.

Now the game itself - I love it already. As with all recent Ys games, the combat is very satisfying and enjoyable. So far not quite as fluid and on point as Ys 7 and 8, but it uses the same concepts and still very good as far as action RPGs go. I find Ys to be the perfect mix of RPG and action and this hits that familiar mark. Getting sick of listening to NPC's yap? No worries, you are about to head out on an epic journey slaying monsters in real time!

The first town looks great, and my first real quest so far feels like classic ys. The journeys to major objectives are long enough to feel like you are really going on an adventure, which i like. The music during this first adventure is classic Y's all the way, reminds me very much of Ys 1 actually, and I got that same feeling all over again where it all combines to give that epic journey feeling...very nice.

The few boss battles i've had so far have been nice - the usual ys giant bosses with some decent difficulty, where you actually need to study the pattern rather than mash buttons. I'd say the older textures and models rear their head here a little though, just not scaling that well into the higher resolutions for some larger enemies - so they can look dated - yet at least one boss actually impressed me with some cool texture effects.

One area this game really shows it's age are the NPC models - but it's far from a deal breaker - especially considering they have actually been entertaining to listen to so far - very nice touch there, just don't expect Ys 8 character models (or better).

If you love Y's, you'll dig this - it feels and plays like Ys should. If you've never played Ys, this is as good as any place to start really, there is no need to know the entire catalogue to enjoy ANY Ys game frankly.

Was eagerly awaiting this and I am not disappointed.

It has been just three months since Steam saw its last Ys release, one plagued with technical issues upon launch at the hands of NIS America. Fortunately, the port here for Memories of Celceta is handled by XSEED, who have done an excellent job porting the title over.

Fast-paced gameplay. The Ys series continues to be my go-to recommendation for those that want a fun JRPG experience without the turn-based combat or relatively slow nature that dominates the genre. Memories of Celceta picks up the pace early on and does not stop from there, immediately throwing the player into a world full of colorful environments, likable characters, and cool boss fights. As for the enemies scattered throughout this world, there seemed to be no end to their diversity. Even towards the very end of the game I was still being presented with new enemies, each with their own unique design and move set. The story maintained this quick pace as well, with dialogue scenes that never really dragged out the experience. This pacing was kept up until the very end and left me feeling very satisfied with the experience.

Fun combat. The skills and type-matchups make the combat immensely more interesting – something more than just a hack and slash fiesta. Certain characters do more damage depending on enemy types and certain skills even allow for different playstyles. For example, I made heavy use of a dashing attack on my main character, which, when combined with the ice stats on my weapon, made for some pretty strategic combat. I would dash into a group of enemies, freezing many of them in the process, get a few hits in before they thawed, then back out to avoid unnecessary damage. This of course is made possible through the game’s incredibly responsive dodging. All it takes is one tap of the dodge button and my character goes rolling in whatever direction I choose. In fact, I traveled the game world by constantly dodge rolling because it was just that fast. All of these elements combined make for some pretty fun combat.

Great soundtrack. Yet again I am here playing another Ys game with another stellar soundtrack. The soundtrack for Memories of Celceta is full of all of the traditional JRPG tracks one would expect, but done so in a masterful way by Falcom Sound Team jdk. There are lively town themes, ominous dungeon tracks, and, of course, action-packed battle themes. The soundtrack may not be the best in the series, but Falcom Sound Team jdk has yet to produce a disappointment and the soundtrack here is no exception. My favorite track ended up being To the Stage of a New Era.

Well-done port. The last Ys game to release on Steam, Ys VIII, had a number of technical issues upon launch at the hands of publisher NIS America. Fortunately, XSEED has done quite the opposite here with Memories of Celceta. The game runs super-smooth at 1080p 60fps and, despite the fact that I played through the entire game before launch, I only ran into a single technical issue (which I will discuss later). On top of that, the porting team went above and beyond with the game’s settings menu. It comes in the form of a launcher that explains what each and every setting does and even includes pictures that note the differences between each setting. That same launcher also allows the game’s auto-save feature to be configured, a feature that is completely independent from the saves featured in-game, as a sort of emergency backup system. This is a godsend for JRPGs, as losing progress due to a power outage is one of the worst feelings ever. And speaking of godsends, the launcher also has an option to toggle the game’s startup logos, allowing players to jump right back into the game without having to view the five or so splashes beforehand. The port is just really well-done overall and I only hope that more ports follow the example set here by XSEED.

Wonky camera. The camera for Memories of Celceta can be a bit troublesome at times. The only control the player has over it is a basic zoom in and out function, the rest being handled by the game. Normally, the game is pretty good at figuring out the right camera angle, but there were several points during my playthrough that had me wishing for a completely player-controlled camera, especially during the swimming segments. The camera at least does a bare minimum job, but it would be so much better if it could be configured further.

Some game freezes. The only technical issue I ran into during my playthrough would be that of some minor game freezes. The first time I ran into this issue I had feared a game crash, but fortunately it turned out to just be a series of short freezes. When these freezes occurred, the game would lock itself up for a second or two, then resume, then freeze for another second or so, then resume and repeat the process a couple more times. Although this issue only happened to me maybe six or seven times, it is still a technical issue nonetheless.

On top of the fun and fast-paced gameplay already present in the original game, the port here is very well-done, including a variety of options to really make the game shine on PC. Even so, the camera can be a bit troublesome at times and the port is not “perfect”, but it is definitely enough to warrant a recommendation, even for those that have never played an Ys game before.

For the very first time I am playing all Ys games. Until very recently I have never played nor seen anyone play any of the Ys games. Around Sept/20 2017 I started with Ys I, then Ys II, followed by Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, Ys Orgin, Ys Seven, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, Ys: Memories of Celceta. Now in in the year 2021 I beat the new game Ys IX: Monstrum Nox. Leaving no current Ys games left on Steam. I will continue this mission of mine if/when more Ys games get ported to Steam. My goal has been reached! Below is how I rank the games I have played and beat so far from best to worst. I love all the Ys games even Ys I. So I am a huge fan of this series. I will edit this review as I play and beat more Ys games.

What I thought of "Ys: Memories of Celceta. "
Ys: Memories of Celceta feels like a cross between Ys:Seven and Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana. It's quite the game and was very enjoyable to play and beat! In my opinion Ys VIII is still by far the best Ys game. And even Ys Seven is still a little better than Celceta. In fact I almost want to say that Ys: Memories of Celceta is about equal to Ys: The Oath in Felghana. I had to think about it for 10 minutes of if I was going to place this game above or below Ys: The Oath in Felghana! So I am offically calling it equal! Sure on the list I did place it above YS: The Oath in Felghana but it's really equal. I like them both just as much. But probably for different reasons. I really like Ys: The Oath in Felghana is amazing! So that shows you how much I like most Ys games. lol

Now lets talk a little about Ys: Memories of Celceta. First of I'm going to mainly compare it to Ys:Seven which is the game it's closest too in my opinion. The reason why is because both Ys: Seven and Ys: Memories of Celceta go with the older above view game play. You can't jump and it uses the party system. So eventually you have a whole team! I find the game play is really refined and is great. The story and charachters were awesome but I like Ys:Seven more. Here are the things YS: Memories of Celceta does better than Ys:Seven.

Graphics: The graphics are much improved over Ys Seven.
Controls: Both yes and no but ultimately controls are better than Ys:Seven.
Skills: The way skills work is extremely close to Ys:8 and I love that skill system so Ys:Memoris of Celceta is better than Ys:Seven in that regard.
Weapon Upgrade System: Ys: Memories of Celceta has a really fun a neat weapon upgrade system where you use materials to increase various weapon attributes! It sort of feels like Dark Cloud 1 & 2. It's kind of useless or more so not needed unless you play on harder than normal difficulties you can probably ingore it as it's not really needed. Not enough end game content to really flush this system out. It would do better in a longer game like Ys:Seven or Ys:8. Still it's great.

Below is where this game falls a little short of Ys: Seven.

Story: For the most part I enjoyed the story more in Ys:Seven. And this is a spoiler but YS:Memories of Celceta almost does not have an ending. It feels very rushed at the end.
Characters: This one is very close! hmmm..... I kind of want to call it a tie but I still like Ys:Seven more.
Bosses : In most ways Ys: Memories of Celceta and Ys Seven have better bosses than even my favorite Ys game which is Ys:8 however even between these two games I like Ys:Seven bosses more. A little more style and difficulty and originality to the bosses
in YS:Seven! Some older YS games also have bosses just as good as Seven etc.

World itself: Ys:Seven features a slightly longer game and world. While it is close and each game has there own strength and weaknesses on the world itself. Ys:8 still holds the record for the biggest game world and game length.

I'm not doing a perfect job at breaking down detail per detail. Even some of my previous Ys games reviews may have more overall information. But Ys: Memories of Celceta is so grounded I kind of don't need to give it it's own review. It's like YS:Seven but feels a little more smooth on the controls, graphics polished. But overall story/charachters are just not as good? So I should leave it at that. Great game! Like I said plenty of times I love all Ys games so far! Just some are better than others and for different reasons. And Ys: Memories of Celceta along with Ys:Seven both have better bosses than even YS:8. And Ys:8 is my favorite! So don't think twice about adding this great game to your collection! That goes double if your a Ys Fan!

This is the game of all time. It has gameplay. It has environments. It has characters. It even has a story.

This is where modern Ys games start to lay the groundwork still got some rough edges especially with the story but it's fun and what follows this game is Ys8 which is a masterpiece
