I just love the insane speed of the bump combat. I & II have my favorite story in the whole saga and Dawn, despite being fanfiction, just feels like it was made by people who loved the first two games to death (something Origin failed to capture in my opinion). I also adore the insane amount of little details they put into Eternal/Complete. No other Ys game since has come even remotely close to that.
My personal favorite is Oath in Felghana. Has great level and monster design with a lot of variety and arguably the best soundtrack in the series.
Good thing is that they didn't repeat this mistake with the later entries.
Origin was more linear, sure, but they did refine the mechanics a bit, and had a better story. Also, Feena!
I wish they'd make another Ys that would feature the twin goddesses.
Regarding Ys8, they're pretty much done with patching it. Doubt they'll do any other updates, but the game is in great shape, so you might as well just dive in.
Gameplay and storywise, it's better than Celceta and Seven (though that's not saying much).
My order:
1. Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana
2. Ys Origin
3. Ys Oath in Felghana
4. Ys VI The Ark of Naphitism
5. Ys Memories of Celceta
6. Ys Seven
7. Ys 1
8. Ys V: Kefin Lost Kingdom of Sand
9. Ys 2
That being said, my favorite(s) would be a toss up between Origins and Oath. Those games are basically flawless for me ...although Oath has a couple horrible bosses on Nightmare ... like Gyalva, ugh... so that alongside some more story elements in Origins might put Origins ahead of Oath. But...it lacks Adol (aside from boss rush) and that's a big thing for me in an Ys game.
I like almost all Ys games, but I can't really say I love any other Ys game other than those three, Dana was pretty close to breaking that, but the busywork fetch quests and the annoying party system just killed it for me.
The earlier titles are just classic examples of outdated and mostly bad game design, and anything after Origins is simply an absolutely unexceptional modern JRPG where 90% of the gameplay consists either of killing absolutely braindead trashmobs or of otherwise performing utterly monotonous tasks, like farming materials from harvest points or completing uninteresting quests which consist either of killing yet another braindead trashmob (or multiple ones) or of boring fetch quests. The story, writing and characters are as bad as in every other JRPG as well and the world is ultimately absolutely empty. It's just a collection of areas with nothing to do and a few monsters running around.
Origins, Felghana and Napisthim also have laughable stories, writing and characters, but the gameplay is at least unique and engaging. The parts between the boss fights are short and there is actual exploration and puzzles in the dungeons. In the newer Ys titles, you do absolutely nothing between the boss fights. You run from point A to B and talk to a few people. Not even the dungeons have anything to do. Yet again, you either run to the miniboss and beat it, get your new item, then run to the boss, or you go to the miniboss, beat it and then collect slabs to open the boss door, then run to the boss. While the dungeons in Oath, Felghana and Napishtim are also not mind-blowing at all, at least you had to do SOMETHING in them beyond pressing the button for character specific actions in some parts (which btw is an absolute joke mechanic: having to switch to a specific character for one second just to press a button adds NOTHING to the gameplay.)
Overall the three games mentioned above were esentially arcade games with RPG elements instead of formulaic, soulless 20xx JRPGs, and they were mostly well designed.
I have played through all of the Ys games released so far and got every achievement, but I can't say I enjoyed Ys Seven to 8. It's just a matter of completion at this point, I guess. I did enjoy the old titles, but they are by no means good.
Oath In Felghana has the BEST OST.
*Nostalgic factor: I jumped into the series with Origin because, well, it said origin so i must be the first game chronologically. Back then i only had a very crappy computer so this is the only game i can play. I'm not sure how i would rank this reason cuz playing the game after 6 years apart and it still feels fresh
1.Gameplay: have to say after playing Origin, the combat and movement in this game feel smoother to me in comparison to Oath and Ark tho not by a whole lot.
2.Music: nothing beats the prologue theme, Feena's theme and Genesis beyond the begining except the bird boss's theme in 7.
3.Story: you get a lot of story in this game. I say more than other entries. Also Origin actually has a sequel so the story makes much more sense to me.
The second favorite game should be Oath or Chronicles. Cant decide that yet.
