You play as a demon who takes control over dead heroes' souls, and then raises them up as undead puppets who do your bidding. So in other words, the demon main character who you play as in this game is essentially a necromancer too.
However, unlike typical undead creatures, in this game, the undead heroes retain their minds and personalities and can still talk and think; they are not mindless zombies/rotting corpses and/or skeletons.
Although...you also get to control a giant ironclad undead zombie as one of your many puppets, who is the most explicitly undead-est out of all your undead puppets in this game, and who you can choose to play as whenever & as much as you want (after you've reached the point in the game where you you've taken control of him, that is).
