So, considering the physics rely on center of gravity and mass and all that, why has this NOT been introduced? I know this is an old thread, but its been almost a year and this would help greatly.
because the center of mass changes when you leave build mode, so there is no way to know where it will be while inside build mode without causing a lot of performance problems (the calculations done when leaving build mode are one of the most resource heavy calculations in the entire game, if they are moved to inside build mode they need to be redone every time you change anything so you are going to have a really complex calculation running really often, which is what causes the performance issues). If you don't take into account that then the com indicator becomes unreliable since that change can transform a back heavy vehicle into a front heavy one
I guess the devs found a way around the performance issues. That's great news, looking forward to that update.

currently it's not known how it was implemented as only a single video of a basic creation has been posted (with just a dozen normal blocks, which can be welded fairly quickly and is going to result in a single weld group anyways). It could either be that the performance of the welding algorithm has been improved enough for it to be done on build mode, the mass redistribution has been improved enough for it to not result in too much error on average cases, or they might have been able to stop having to do that mass redistribution entirely
