A wheel or wheel like block that would act as treads that doesn't get crushed under the weight unlike most wheels.
Larger and more resilient mechanical parts such as rotating servo and pistons to reduce the chance of bugging out between multiple connected mechanical groups.
Cannons that do not launch explosive projectiles but instead launch kinetic projectiles like armour piercing rounds that deal much larger amounts of damage to a few blocks instead of spreading out the damage.
More effective and heavier armour.

Watch the last dev diary. Tl;dr wheels are complex, and tank tracks would require simulating many wheels and thus require a lot of processing power (which would make them use a lot of the complexity limit)

I like your ideas of armor-piercing shell tank cannons and heavier, more durable armor.

tank treads would be nice, and different projectile types and/or better armor would be cool
