Why are all the Updates just DLC?
It seems like all updates are anymore is DLC. I don't play Trailmakers much anymore because of this. It would be great if I could get all the "performance" blocks (IE: wings, motors, thrusters, ect.) for free. That won't happen why? Because Trailmakers is more about making money than delivering to the people. The dev's are just milking the cash cow, it's upsetting. You don't see Palword or Scrap Mechanic doing this, SM could've easily hid survival behind a paywall. You do see Destiny 2 (It's free so I can't get too mad), Cities: Skylines, The Sims, and others do it though. Again it's upsetting. So what are they going to take away multiplayer if they stop making money? Like Nintendo did with the 3ds/Wii. Again I hate the direction this game is going, with the new "update" being primarily DLC, I'm dropping one of my favorite games. PURELY DUE TO THE "UPDATES".

They are a small team these dlcs are for funding major updates which tend to come every few months. and honestly the dlcs and cheap af if you have a job it shouldn't be a problem. i understand where u r coming from though but this is quite common for indie devs

Development costs money. You simply can't expect an indefinite service (free updates and development) for the price of a good (a one time purchase). No income = no development = no free updates, it's as simple as that. They need to put things people want in the DLCs because otherwise people wouldn't buy them. Scrap mechanic hasn't had an update in over a year, thinking that that's better than having free updates along with paid DLCs is stupid, you objectively get more free content in the later case

Interestingly enough, Hello Games gives nothing BUT free updates to one of their games, No Man's Sky. All their income comes from new sales of the game.

NMS is currently the #157 most sold game on steam. They got extremely lucky with the game becoming popular, and as a result got money to fund the game for a while. As time goes on eventually they will have to either stop development or look into other methods of funding, because eventually all potential consumers of the game will have already bought it. I have also read from owners of NMS that they are only now adding things that were promised before the release, so they are pretty much forced to make the updates free to not become an outright scam

NMS is over 8 years old and they free updated it because it’s friggin unusual. Word of mouth is a powerful tool.
It’s also on 3 platforms, so it needs no further income. That’s what I read from the dev

"Because Trailmakers is more about making money than delivering to the people."

Yes, that is how business works. Do you work for free? Didn't think so.

No but Merch is always an option, there's donations as well. It would be one thing if they only locked campaigns behind DLC, but they lock FUNCTIONAL blocks behind DLC. I bought Airborne and High Seas purely for the maps. I wouldn't get angry over then locking extra maps or story behind DLC. There's other options to making money, but how they're going about it is right now is wrong.

Merch/donations aren't going to be nearly enough to support a for profit company. All the "functional" blocks in the DLCs atm are mostly reskins of free blocks. The current method of making money is the least bad of the available options.

with how much no mans sky has sold and keeps selling this is earnestly a very very very very silly comparison.

The reason no mans sky can keep outputting free updates is partially to live down their launch but also because they made so much money they could afford to float such a things for alot longer.

Like... comparing no mans sky and trail makers is like comparing a company like walmart to a regional chain... like both are doing good but they are one totally different levels of resources.

So make them skins or decals of other blocks? Don't make them a separate block, if they're really just "reskins" of other blocks.

They can't be skins/decals because they have different sizes (which is still a cosmetic difference)

Sizes are a PHYSICAL difference not cosmetic. It changes how and when a block can be used. So please don't call a FUNCTIONAL difference cosmetic. It annoys me. It would be like Minecraft locking slabs or variants of stone brick behind a paywall. Different games, same thing. It's a VARIANT of a block which is less of a FUNCTIONAL difference than SIZE.
