You get one free repair no matter the situation (I like to use it to prevent fall damage, or land a plane in tricky spots). Once the freebie repair is used up, if you're still moving the meter slowly fills up until you get another repair. If you stop moving, you can repair infinitely. It's obvious to me the goal behind repair tokens is to prevent repair spam, which would trivialize the whole game if you could always, 100% of the time under any circumstances, instantly reset your vehicle.
I am also playing Stranded in Space completely solo.
Just had another example: Broke my plane while trying to land on the sky islands. Sure would be nice to repair it, but nooo, I have to fall all the way down into the water... AND STILL HAVE TO KEEP WAITING UNDERWATER FOR THE DANG TOKEN!
It exists for PvP and for example the Airborne campaign. Being able to immediately repair after the slightest damage both ruins the challenge (difficulty) and fun (in PvP).
Thats why they exist.
Complaining about that is like crying about "why won't they make the Airborne campaign boringly easy" or "why can't I be a piece of ♥♥♥♥ to my friends in PvP". What would be the point of combat systems if you could just basically ignore/avoid all consequences?
For the non-PvE Campaigns, get used to just stopping when you got time so you refresh a used token. Spending those 3 seconds of your life won't hurt you.
