Actually it kind of does use momentum. It does have a run button like the 2D Mario games, but Meat Boy still needs to build up a bit of momentum for some gaps or wall jump if that isn't an option, as wall jumping reaches further. It's just hard to notice as you sometimes need to take it slow as everything is a 1 hit kill and some areas require slow precision, like some areas in Sonic levels except Meat Boy's are longer. Most of the latter zones in Super Meat Boy are like that, especially The End Zone.
As a benefit that Sonic also has over Mario that Super Meat Boy shares; unlike the 2D Mario games I compared the run button to, namely Mario 1 and 2 on Famicom and Famicom Floppy, Meat Boy's jumping physics usually don't handle like a.ss.
Still incomplete (especially original Sonic games are missing). However, if you already like it please follow our curator page :)

Thanks for the hint! I'm considering rewriting something :) Yet, Pop'n Twinbee: Rainbow Bell Adventures is already by itself a copycat of Rocket Knight Adventures' (also by Konami) mechanics.

They both have a chargeable multi-directional rocket dash move that rebounds off surfaces, but that's about where the comparison ends.
RKA is a linear action platformer with a strong focus on combat and honestly doesn't require you use the rocket pack much at all. It feels like a proto-Treasure game in a lot of ways.
Rainbow Bell Adventures isn't like that at all. There's many branching paths and secrets and junk everywhere, it's much more about platforming and collectibles and such than combat, you use the dash move way more here, etc.
Either way, I'm aware of the one similarity. Here's me years ago in this thread.
Therefore I said it's just a copycat of its rocket pack mechanic :) (not of the whole game) And I also referred to Rocket Knight Adventures 2 (not 1) in my reviews, which has less linear levels, infinite rocket power and overall much more use of the rocket pack than in part 1.
Nonetheless, because the Comit games seem also visually inspired by Rainbow Bell Adventures, I rewrote two of the little curator reviews. Thanks again for the hint!
I don't know whether to be pleased or appalled that they did a steam release of those two
