+1. I want a physical edition for pc. I am not going to buy a console version without having such platform.

I literally had to think about this for a moment... wait, people still use disc drives on their PC's? I thought this was a dead practice for the most part.

Collectibles are collectibles. I just dont want to have to buy a holo-case ruined by a Switch/PS4/X-Box logo.

I suppose, I just wanted the PC version for modding. Was going to get a physical version for my Switch personally. I actually thought it was odd back when I got discs for Borderlands 2 and Fallout 4 when I had gotten their SE versions despite them being for Steam (they still had codes)... but I guess optical media is still sort of around.

Most likely, a "physical" version would be a Steam key and a backup disc, like a lot of physical PC releases these days.

And yes, you can still get disc drives for your desktop, for instance this cheap Lite-On: https://www.amazon.com/Lite-Internal-Drive-Optical-IHAS124-14/dp/B01BVWTJ8Y/
And for laptops or desktops that cannot take a Half-Height drive there are external USB drives:

I know you can still get them. I just thought it was kind of redundant as the whole idea of Steam was being a digital library of games wasn't it? I had one up until my pc's last rebuild when I got tired of replacing a part I wasn't using anymore. Prior to, the last thing I had used it for was to burn CDs for a roadtrip which has been replaced by Spotify on my smartphone... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Some of us want to actually own our games, not just rent through Steam. Honestly, I think digital distribution is one of the worst things to happen to PC gaming, it's almost impossible to actually buy games for PC now.

I'm that way with almost everything except PC... only because CDs are too small and require many discs to store almost any current game and most devs aren't going to actually put the whole thing on there anyway, opting instead to simply place a portion or most likely whatever will fit on a simple DVD and making the rest a "Day 1 patch". All a disc really amounts to in my opinion in today's gaming is a physical verision of a portion of the game's download... with a few exceptions. This game would probably be one of them owing to its small size, but for the vast majority its not really feasible. That's why I didn't bother with a disc drive on my PC. Its dying, much as I myself hate it... there's no use fighting the inevitable evolution of technology.

Sonic Mania, including all redist packages required, can all fit on a single CD-ROM. Of course knowing the way the PC games industry is going, this would likely be nothing more than a Steam code and a backup disc.

I mentioned this would be the case with Mania, not always going to be the case though. Take a game like Black Desert Online... if they supplied an install disc, last I checked my install for that game was somewhere in the neighborhood of 50gb (And sometimes MMO's will do this, Aion had one at one point, I still have my Steelbook copy of the Vanilla installer from being a beta tester/pre-order player.) But even going to things that aren't MMO's and require huge amounts of assets, look at Skyrim for example... SkyrimSE's install directory comes to 16gb... that most definitely would not fit on a CD-rom, or even a DVD. Would actually fall just short of fitting in an HDDVD (15gb) and using a BRdisc (50gb) would be absolute overkill and probably inflate production costs... not to mention I don't know of too many people that have them in their computers. Its just being moved away from not only because games are getting bigger but to save on production costs as physical media costs more to distribute where as digital games are readily avalable 24/7 and instantly downloadable with no cost to obtain for the vendor or the consumer (other than the game itself). I'd like to keep having more physical games myself... but they're outgrowing the physical mediums we have available. Plus if it keeps costs down, I say let them have at it... I'll embrace the Steam sales all day long.

Sega doesn't do physical PC releases these days, but it would be a good excuse for me to buy it another billionth time.

It would be nice... (keep in mind though... the Collectors Edition was much more expensive and didn't actually have a game in it). Granted if they do, like Ritsuko, I'd be snapping it up for the umpteenth time as well. Not so much in favor of Sega as I feel like Iizuka is doing little to rekindle fans' faith in the series and Sonic team specifically but to Support Christian Whitehead and his team for the awesomeness that they have brought forth. They have to be making bank off this game with their names being attached to the initial loading screen like that.

THERE A PC COLLECTOR EDITION? GIVE ME THAT LINK ILL BUY IT RIGHT NOW
yasha_mikage Apr 19, 2018 @ 11:14am
There is, but supply is pretty short nowadays since they only made a limited number at the time of the game's release. (i.e. They're expensive as heck now.)
