this game is very well populated right now
this game is honestly terrible and simply pay to win.. its only good because it has people hooked in its gambling system, and it has a good combat system..
It's definitely not dead but the future of the game is uncertain in my opinion.

I have more than 10k hours on record and I still log in every day for rewards but I no longer play actively. I log on in hopes that one day the game will make some much needed changes.

The game has amazing combat (aside from desynch), pretty good graphics and lots of things to do, unfortunately 90% of the content is repetitive and the endgame is pvp... That in itself is an issue given that the progression curve in this game is VERY steep, and you can't compete with people who have been playing longer/swiping their credit card more than you.

In summary, right now the core of the game is just climbing a never ending ladder by grinding money and materials for better gear so you can go to better places that get better money and better materials for even better gear, etc...

Also worth mentioning, 1 million log ins a day means nothing in my opinion. I know plenty of ppl like myself who only log in for 2 mins each day to collect rewards.

Regarding "high customer retention"... Some people keep playing because they can't bring themselves to abandon the big investment they've made into the game. Also, I've been through a few guilds and I know for a fact that a good many people quit not long after they start playing.

Factor in the ppl that mostly afk and its a whole lot less than 1 million actual players.
This game has a lot of future.

This post absolutely nails it

The sad reality of BDO. Had potential to streamline into mainstream audience
-Amazing visuals
-Some of the best combat mechanics I've seen in any mmo
-Lots of content

However this is just the face value of this game and issues that people have been complaining about can really only be understood when pouring in several hundred hours.
-RNG: being the backbone of some of the game's most important progression systems. It really f*cks over the amount of hours you put into grinding
-P2W: On paper, yes, it is technically P2W. Reason why its not discussed as a huge issue is because of RNG. There is no guarantee for 100% succession of your gear to enhance, and even if you did you would have to swipe tens of thousands of $$$ into this game. Many long-term players disregard this issue to new players just because its 'pay for convenience', which I think is a stupid f*cking way of saying 'you're still going to spend a ridiculous amount of money, its just not pay to win'. Those same players are probably swiping left and right at any chance they've got. Also one of the main reasons new players quit: They cannot compete against credit card swipers. This leads onto the next point:

Grind, grind, grind. Really the main meat of the game. Though this game boasts the huge amount of content it has, in reality it justs makes you feel like you're doing a lot. You're not actually achieving that much--> Yeah the combat is great, but the PVE mobs you're fighting against are all dumb AIs. Yes, there are many different types of enemies, but there is no variety in enemy responses. You find a circle of mobs, you use one or two cc or big aoe attacks, and they're dead. All the silver you gain is then placed into an RNG enhancer system and if you're lucky enough (usually not) you move onto the next grinding spot. Repeat. Hundreds - Thousands of hours of doing the same thing. Fun.

If you're into brain-dead grinding, its actually one of the best games out there in the mmo market. However I doubt this game will go into mainstream (like how rust did when popular streamers picked this up) due to the amount of senseless grinding it has. I remember Summit1g playing this a few years back: guy quit probably because he realised the steep curve of progression it had to offer. Due to the slow curve many people resort to spending a huge amounts of cash, which many regular players don't have.

MMOs in general are designed to waste the players time. It's just the nature of it. If you've played any MMOs you'll realise that there is a lot of content it has to offer; e.g. doing different questlines and missions before reaching the next checkpoint. In BDO its mostly replaced by grinding and other boring sh*t because it actually lacks DIVERSE content. It has a lot of the same sh*t instead of different sh*t. So in reality its a grinding game. And if the developers would want to change this they would have to 'overhaul the entire game' because the grind is already part of the foundation. The damage is done and it is already too late to change it otherwise players would complain. So to finally answer your question: Does it has a future? In context of moving into a bigger playerbase, probably not. It's just a stale game that will eventually die when next gen games come out. Whether that be 5, 10 or 20 years, we'll never know. However the playerbase is strong, but just like guy who commented above, I'm also the one of the many players who just log in to get rewards and when I feel like it (maybe once every 5-6 months), I look at the updates and do boss scrolls/dark rifts.

It's doing quite well at the moment, and there are a lot of future updates planned (the ice zones, more Ocean content , PvP and then the entire other continent).

If it loses players it's because they get too stingy again or if any of the newer games are better. People will go to Crimson Desert if there is some decent multiplayer but it looks like they are moving away from that MMO stuff it had initially.

Elyon is the only other project that will be out soon. that is a similar looking game But it's probably going to be p2w as BDO was at launch, considering how long it's been in development and that it's Kakao publishing it.

They really just need reasons to keep people logging in regularly at this point. Season servers, the events and new classes help with that.

IMO have fun as much as you can and expect it to be fleeting cause nothing lasts forever and if the game does shut down keep your friends on your Discord or whatever so that if and when you all find something new to play then go do it.
Some one has to make a better game first for bdo to die. Not going to bash bdo over all its flaws (everyone should be well aware of them at this point), but the fact of it is, no one has made a better game with 3rd person action combat, so bdo is still on top, there isn't really any competition. The other action mmo's available have far worse flaws than bdo.

There are some really nice looking JP mmos coming down the line, but JP tends to not care at all about pvp. If blue protocol or pso new genesis have pvp, i wouldn't count on it being more than a side distraction. Be happy to be proven wrong on that point in the future though.

We can dream of a game that plays like bdo and has the PvE and strategy of say, FF, but as stagnant as the genre is at this point, i seriously doubt that will happen any time soon. There are still games coming out that use tab-targeting, a system designed originally for dialup connections. The pro tab-target player base already has a mountain of games to play, a few of which are in the top 5 of all mmo's played right now. The action mmo genre still has plenty of room to improve and grow, nothing is going to dethrone WoW or FF after all this time, so it confuses me why devs even try. It's easier to chase to trends than create new ones i guess?

BDO, like EVE Online, has its niche, and its a big and profitable niche.

i rather take its spin on sandbox/passable themepark mmo then say, WoW's stagnant same repeating cycle of ... the most basic and play it safe approach any mmo has ever done.

yes, vanilla is a flavour that has to exist, but the chocolate cookies and dough mix that BDO offers is better :)
For those here, who are only complaining how bad it is and without precise critisism or facts, or that it won´t have a future.. get a future yourself or start to work at least on your knowledge or on your attitute towards gamedevelopers and people who like the creations.

Comments like:
"this game is honestly terrible and simply pay to win.. its only good because it has people hooked in its gambling system, and it has a good combat system..",

"well the fate of bdo is the same will all the mmos... it will die fast... mmos are dead in general those days...they are out of ideas",

or especially the topic-creator

"does this game have much of a future or is it dead? I mean all these Knew MMO's coming out soon does BDO Really have a chance to Compete or is BDO About to start declining?"

Those comments are just ridiculous and misleading to new players with intelligence and people who already enjoy the game and especially for those frustrating who are putting effort in it.
If you don´t like the game. Simply don´t play it and don´t give a non-sense commentary.

If you want to improve it or improve the developers work, give intelligent critism. Show your appreciation to the hard working creators of games and to people who are making those things even possible for you. Not only this game, also other games. It is still art, like creating music or coloring a picture.

In the end you are just insulting the art-creator with your non-sense commentaries.

For me personally aside of defending the game, i simply love the game, since i started to play it one month ago, and when i see videos how it was 4 years ago, it´s just incredible how it changed positively, and how the developers are putting their daily work in this game.

They bring out every week new content. And if you are looking on the servers, most of them are full of players, especially in the main hours all of the servers are crowded. Favourite servers are mostly overrun in main hours. So the game is afar from dead or going to die soon.
And there won´t be a capable competitor in the near future so far, since PearlAbbys is one of the less providers, who are offering you mostly free or affordable games without monthly subscriptions.
And the pay-to-win style how some people would name it, is totally wrong. You can create free characters, play with them as much as you want, and gain the same strength as people have, who put money in the game.
Yes you can put money in it, but it is not a must-have. But of course it will improve your personal aspect of the game, and the time you are enjoying in it.

Thats it from me. Thanks.

I like that analogy. People are still looking for the perfect Neapolitan. and getting angry when games don't meet expectations. Think it's more genre burn out than anything else, vanilla still being stuck in the past. Why else would games like Bless get sooo much hype regardless of its history?

I'd be more angry about WoW still keeping the status quo after what, 16 near 17 years? Vanilla is getting stale because its been in the freezer for near 2 decades... and it isn't BDO's job to try to fix that if they don't want to.

And make no mistake, i really do dislike defending bdo, because most of the base issues i have with game are more monetary driven than necessity, (and no, not P2W, other issues) but at the very least they are pushing the genre forward. I am just saying, people shouldn't dump their frustrations from being let down by the genre as a whole on a single game, bdo or otherwise.

It might just be time for people to walk away from the genre for awhile. I have to give credit to bdo for showing us a glimpse of what is possible though, with its combat. Credit where its due regardless.
If people really want a single target to dump on regarding the state of MMOs, target Smedley. He's the root of the SWG NGE, which caused numerous developers to think that SWG's model couldn't work (even though it was obvious that the NGE is what killed it, it was fine before).

So there you go. Someone who prevented any real innovation in MMOs, and has for DECADES.

Dump on him. Leave things that aren't detrimental alone.

BDO is one of the most popular mmorpg's right now. It won't "die" in the next 4-5 years, I can almost guarantee that.

I explain how games dies fast.

1) Dropping playerbase
2) No new update anymore or limited update only to fix bugs.
3) No communication about the game devolopment or future.
4) Ignore the "casual" players complain on forum and only listening to "pro" players or streamers.
5) Customer support don't excist or bot answer
6) Toxic and smurfs problem ignored.

I don't see any sign of this in BDO and only lower playerbase but that is when a lot of people didn't transfer from Kakao to Pearl Abyss.

go to google and check the website "mmo population". bdo has currently an activity score of 10 and 1 million + active players. now im asking you, does this sound "dead" to you?

edit: im a gw2 player myself and recently just came back to bdo. the game feels alive for sure, no worries..
