Have you wandered around and found about six or seven of those icons that look like the hexagram? If you activate enough of those, it will tell you that it's unlocked the gate for you, and you may choose to enter it (or not).
As far as I know, you need to be able to sing, join, release, ascend, descend, transform, and possibly think before you'll get a message about the gate being unlocked for you.
Once you get that message, if you just take your hands off the keys and let it autoplay a bit, it will take you directly to the gate. I recommend stopping the autoplay as soon as you see the gate, lest it decide to go in for you (getting out again is apparently quite difficult.)
If you aren't sure if you've gotten this message yet, just let it autoplay a bit and see if it rolls you back to where the gate is located. Depending on how far you've wandered away from your initial spawn location, this could take a few iterations.
In my case, I've chosen NOT to go into the gate, and I've been happily wandering around collecting Things.
But.....I'm about to bite the bullet and enter the gate, because there appears to be precious little left for me to do, and I'm not finding any more abilities. I can only assume I *have* to enter the gate to unlock the rest of the abilities, but I could be wrong.
