Greatsword is literally obsolete in iceborne.
Honestly, ♥♥♥♥ Iceborne. If you play Greatsword, you're forced into either literal pristine minxmax play or you cannot play at all. Everything from Barioth onwards is literally too fast for the greatsword to get any combos in, sometimes even too fast to get a 2nd hit. You can't charge any attacks anymore, because every enemy becomes a zero-seconds-to-recover enemy, that moves far too frantically, and leaves no openings at all for the greatsword.

The greatsword has literally become obsolete in Iceborne because in their desperation, every last enemy now moves far too fast and has no recovery windows whatsoever.

I'll give you that Barioth is an incredibly rough monster to be introduced to, especially when it's one of the EARLY monsters in iceborne. I know that feel.
what if I told you it's essentially just a reskinned rathian?

saying things are too fast for great sword simply isn't true... maybe they don't sit there and just let you combo on them anymore, so just get a quick sheath and critical draw set and do draw attacks; that's how I beat kirin lol... run up, smack the horn, and run off XD

I will be honest with you, mate. I play HH, the second slowest weapon in the game after GS, and the speed doesn't bother me as much. Also, isn't GS good at flinching monsters?

Watch Asmongold, hes nearly beaten the whole of MHW and Iceborn with greatsword alone.

GS is one of those weapons for the patient or know the monster already.

I feel like I had it downpat in the base-game. Only thing that gave me grief there was maybe Nergigante's movement. It just feels like Iceborne took it past 10/10 for issues. It went from a weapon dishing out heavy combos to hitting once, at best, and hoping you eventually get a stagger and then also hoping the enemy doesn't skip animations which many iceborne enemies do, or hoping the enemy actually takes time to recover which many iceborne enemies don't.

greatsword is the most busted weapon in the game in terms of easy to use / dmg output.

ya, pretty sweet when you tackle through a monsters incoming attack and stagger them, then follow up with a nice combo :P

tho really I find myself using the rolling slash move a whole lot.
the one where you start to charge a main attack then cancel it with a tackle and follow up with a sweeping swing(IIRC) and you do a rolling slash and generally dodge any incoming attacks while repositioning on the other side of the monster.

I think your just frustrated, which is understandable as GS tests patience the most of all the weapons.

I'd switch to Hammer, it's similar and has tons of movement and forgivable attack cancelling & options. Go for ankles and arms, the head is only really an option when their downed.

Wash your mouth sir. Head is only option when monster is downed?!. Sir, did you fall on a Hammer or did the Hammer fall on you. Hammer smash face. Hammer loves faces, all the faces. Hammer is inclusive af, even smash teammate faces when they get close to big monster face.

Only smash face when downed, ha. You make good joke sir.

And Asmon is neither patient or know much of the monsters kekw. But still goes to show that if someone as casual as him can do it, you probably can too. But one thing's universal though, that also happened to Asmon, the second you get tilted, just like OP seemed to be when posting this thread, your performance in a fight goes down significantly and things appear far more difficult than they are.

Greatsword is a good weapon, outside of SnS (the best melee weapon in the game), no other melee weapon beat GS damage. So it's low speed is justified.

Great synergy with Frostcraft, Health augments,Critical draw, tackle is a great defensive tool, it's probably the second best melee weapon.

And every weapon in the game demands a lot of practice to get the most of it.

Asmongold atleast tries to understand and know the monster, a key element with GS. Though, he is easily un-patient.

Nah thats the Dual Blades. Nonstop spamming with crazy mobility all day with almost 0 downtime in damage lol
You don't need to time anything with it just go Ham.

Going ham with DBs will just get you killed.

The 3rd attack of the basic combo string as recovery time. Demon Dance will root you in place with no way of cancelling it. Demon Mode constantly drains stamina, even with a dash juice, and you can't dodge when it is empty. Dual Blades don't gave the staggering power to interrupt a monster like GS can. Dual Blades don't have a tackle to brute force their way through hits. Etc.

If you think you don't need to time anything, then go try spamming demon dance against Devil Jho, and see how that works out for you.

What likely happened is that you watched a speed running video and thought that they were just mindlessly spamming, not realizing that they just happened to know the monster inside and out.

You are thinking of Rise dual blades, not world. World you have to worry about stamina, and you don't have the same nutty damage(though the damage is still decent).

Did Nargacuga with Greatsword. It was even nice enough to give me two mantles.

Indeed ... same as synthetizing your own medications. The more you feel entitled to it, your ability to invent them and pay them by yourself goes down significantly and things appear far more difficult than they are.

If we can do it, you probably can too.
