Need help with Great Jagras/First Boss
I just started playing and I'm on the second quest, where I have to kill this boss called Great Jagras, the issue is that its taking too long to kill and I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

I've been following him around the map for like 30+ minutes while attacking nonstop, so I assumed its a scripted fight and alt f4'd the game. I didn't find anything online mentioning it being a hard or tricky fight so I must be doing something really wrong XD
btw I was using the spinny sword with the flying bug.

It's not scripted and even with the bare basic Insect Glaive, it shouldn't take more than 15 minutes to kill Great Jagras. Monsters don't recover health unless they're sleeping in their lair and Great Jagras is pretty much the introduction to Large Monsters which don't really get difficult for newcomers until you go into the third hunt in the story.

Insect Glaive is a mobile weapon that you'll want to gather essences from the monster in order to power yourself up. If you're a beginner, I wouldn't recommend IG as your first weapon, I'd recommend you go with something like Lance(even though it's been nerfed to hell and back in World) or Sword and Shield. But if you're going to stick with Insect Glaive, you'll wanna keep essences on whenever you can. Learn where those essences come from and most importantly, if you have the third essence on the kinsect, leave your kinsect out to attack the monster, it's free damage. When the Kinsect returns, you'll get powered up by having all three essences.

Also while jumping seems good with the Insect Glaive, allow me to crush any notions of using that as an evasive move. That's going to stop being protective real fast. It's really only there to allow you to mount the monster in question, which mounting is also free damage if you have the stamina, brace when you need to and move when you need to, but the game pretty much tells you when to do either of those anyhow.

But you also need to know when to attack and when to dodge, which for Great Jagras, it basically leaves itself open to attack 90% of the time, so... just wail on it. Later on in the game, Monster attacks gain elements, statuses, and/or just hit like a truck, so you'll want to learn how to be evasive and though it will look like you can jump over an attack. Monster Hunter Hitboxes are a lot larger than the animation. I've been nailed by attacks that should've flown right over.

Things might have changed, I've not used IG since 2019.

I would SOS for help. You're probably doing something wrong, but I can't really think of what it might be, especially since I don't do not use Insect Glaive. Maybe consider switching weapons or looking up an IG guide?

I believe with Great Jagras, all of it's moves go forward in some way, so sticking to the sides and beating it, and using a jump attack to chase after its charge move might be the most effective strat. I don't know how far it goes though.
Just a guess, like I said, I don't use IG.

I'll try a different weapon then, with the Insect Glaive I was just spamming buttons to see what happens
For this game, I do recommend you watch a short tutorial video on how to use whatever weapon you've decided to pick up, each one has such a different playstyle it's almost like playing a different game.

Trust me, we've all been there before. All part of starting out. When I first started back in Tri, Great Jaggi carted me three times.

Thanks for the tips guys, I did it! I switched to the big hammer and it was much easier.
Also found out that weapon durability is a thing is this game XD

Been there. I had only 5 minutes left when I beat my first run of Great Jagras. I didn't know how sharpness worked and I stubbornly slammed my red sharpness greatsword into it for like 30 minutes.
