Is there a way to change the affinity?
The best weapon I can currently produce has a value of -30, which makes it weaker on average than the second strongest.

I don't understand how the affinity value comes about anyway. I know what it does, but not where it comes from. Does it follow fixed rules, or is it pure coincidence?

The affinity on a weapon can only be changed by adding an affinity augment. If you don't know what that is, then you don't need to worry about it.

Affinity is additive, and mainly acquired from skills like Weakness Exploit, Critical Eye, Agitator, and more. So for example, if you start with -30% affinity and add level 7 Critical Eye for +40% affinity, that equals +10% affinity.

affinity is just another term for crit chance on world.

Yes, that's how far I got when I read up on what affinity is all about in gaming magazines. They also calculated that a weapon with a lower overall value and a positive affinity does more damage on average than one with a higher overall value and negative affinity.

It just makes a weapon completely useless for me if I see that it has -30 affinity when I craft it...And I just don't know why it has this value there. It seems kind of random to me, arbitrary.

-30 affinity means you have a 30% chance of a negative crit aka doing less damage you can increase affinity with a number of thing including armor skills

its just an arbitrary statistic they apply to weapons, could be random or planned. I imagine they had a tool to produce weapon stat spreads with limits applied to keep in spirit of the game.

also, even weapons with 'negative' affinity can still outpunch other weapons, as they usually have higher raw damage. if one is able to bring the affinity to 0, the weapon may (and usually does) vastly outperform others.

gamma chorus (hunting horn level 10):
1008 atk, 0% affinity;
1008 atk*1= 1008atk on avarage

striped dodonga (hunting horn level 10):
1092 atk; -20% affinity;
1092*1*0,8+1092*0,75*0,2= 1037,4 atk on avarage

now lets give both of them critical eye 7 (+40%) and critical boost 3 (damage =140%):

gama chorus:
1008atk*1*0,6+1008atk*1,4*0,4= 1169 atk on avarage

striped dodonga:
1092atk*1*0,8+1092atk*1,4*0,2=1179 atk on avarage

as you can see the negative affinity weapon outperforms the 0 affinity weapon. both have comparable blast build up, so its a fair comparison. i could imagine that those magazines compared weapons with totally different elemental values or status build ups...

edit: due to the hunting horn having a songlist, i should have chosen a different weapon type. but im too lazy to do it again.
crap, thats what i get for not using songs most of the time, i completely forgot.

Negative Affinity is usually on "Brute" monster weapons, like Barroth, Diablos, and Tigrex.
Same way Positive Affinity is on "Sharp" monster weapons like Odogaron and Nargacuga.
There can be exceptions, but there's usually an idea of what weapon stat(s) the monster is focused on so those are higher than the average for that tier/progression.

Thanks for the example. That's the point in a game where you have to pull out your calculator on the side to know whether the things you're doing actually make sense. :sakurabeachnenelaugh:

Things in this game which are supposed to be equal level often have tradeoffs, but the end result for average damage over time tends to balance out pretty closely.

What matters more is usually how well you can use your gear.
