World still worth playing with Wilds out? (Multiplayer in particular)
Last MH game I seriously played was 4 Ultimate ages ago. Played a bit of Generations when it came out but stopped for whatever reason, barely a blip in time before World released. Tried World, game would run at 10 FPS and crash after maybe an hour of gameplay and I sort of forgot about it.

I have a better PC now and it's back on my radar, is it too late to start World as a newbie for all intents and purposes? Or should I skip to Wilds?

World is the much better option, imo. I bought Wilds. Put 7 hours into it and the entire time I just felt like returning to World.

Wilds has some nice QoL changes, but ultimately is the lesser version compared to world (when it come to monster AI and the visceral feeling of the combat). It's not bad in any regard, even more so because gaming in general has gotten a ton of lackluster titles lately.

But World is the much better MH title. Plus, average player count per day is still hovering the 40-50k for World. Which gives you an ample amount of people to play with.

Yeah worlds still has that over average ratio going for a game of it's age and depth of updates.

You will never not find people in MHworld until the game dies.
I'm hoping wilds goes that route but play wilds on a console and save your soul. World on pc.
There's still 50K people playing World. You should have no problem finding co-op partners.

I own Wilds and I'm still playing this game too.

World have more content and is a solid game.
You will have a lot of fun, and it still have pretty decent graphics.

For multiplayer definitely world unless you want boring hunts. Unless you're playing with friends who are willingly wearing weak gears multiplayer in wilds is just 4 hunters bullying a helpless monster.

The monsters will spend most of the time writhing in pain and will hardly get a chance to fight back.

Not really, I failed a lot of sos missions because the host or other hunters died on regular monsters like Diablos.

You barely got to high rank and already gave up?

Yep, for the reasons I said. Monster AI is trash and the fights lack impact. Rise had almost the exact same issue when it came to the fights. Less strategic vs arcade style of combat.

I even compared the anja (world) vs dogma (wilds) fight to each other. Both come at roughly the same time point in their respective titles, yet the anja fight is much better (even without all the lightning effects of fighting inside a storm). In comparison, the dogma fight was weak sauce. Pair that with a very silly and stupid story, forced escort and slow follow quests (as if World's requirement to see a cutscene on your own before with a group wasn't annoying enough) and you just have a lesser title in every regard.

And we can't even point at Wilds as being a graphical upgrade. Side by side, both on ultra, World still looks better. So yeah, at this point, World is the better game. I'd even argue it was the better game at launch, but not sure if World's optimization errors were as bad as Wilds were for a good chunk of people. I do remember people having issues with it (normal for a PC title from Capcom) but I also don't remember World's reviews diving into the 'mixed' category.

I almost refunded Wilds right before the two hour mark, but I felt like I hadn't given the game a fair shake at that point. Especially since the god awful story took up most of that time and only let me hunt like two-three monsters by then. But it didn't improve and I beelined the story content as fast as I could because listening to it was draining my will to live.

Regardless, Wilds does have some good points I'd like to see integrated in the future. Love the mounts for travel. Hunter and Palico customization was vastly improved. I'd like to see more lighting effects and locals similar to the dogma fight in the storm. Loved the new gunlance dual burst/stake combo.

Have you played World recently? Both low and high rank rank are an absolute cakewalk, even more so than Rise. World's story had you spend far more time walking around than wilds, and that's not including time wasted with unskippable cutscenes. World certainly has the cleaner visuals, even without proper anti-aliasing, and performance is certainly better, but it was still a terrible launch, even if not as bad as Wilds. You also never finished the story, since there is much more of it in High rank after the credits

I'm actually playing World now and have for the last few days. Getting into Wilds reignited that itch for MH so I'm still invested. Granted, there's not a lot I can do at this point (minus the augmentation grind), but its definitely scratching that itch again. Figure I can probably put in another 20-40 hours before it starts to fade.

And for comparison, World captivated me for about 80 hours before I burned out. Which is a far cry from what Wilds was able to do. So, since the OP was looking for a new MH game after being away for awhile, World is simply the better choice at this point.
