Switch Axe is a bit more selfish, hence why I put it for singleplayer, however it has very easy combos and deals much more consistent damage across the board.
Greatsword is my main, and the skill in it comes from timing, not combos, it could be more or less beginner friendly, depending on how your mind works.
They're both very solid options that are easy to learn however. Charge Blade has an extremely steep learning curve early on, but once you get used to it it can be very powerful. There is no bad weapon in Monster Hunter, so I honestly say just grab one and stick with it.
But seriously, every weapon has a place.
GO NUTS. Try them all and pick what you like.
I main Charge Blade and secondary Heavy Bow Gun.
But I also love using Dual Daggers and Longblade.
So much fun to be had. Go crazy.
its hard because when you start out its a bit of trouble learning the combos and chaining them together in certain applications. perfecting your hits and getting your timing down for your first hours in the game is definitely important.
but you do benefit from diversity because some weapons will put you in more risky situations vs some monsters, and some weapons will easily counter a monster.
i'd suggest using a weapon without a shield, a weapon with a shield, and then a ranged weapon. from there you can figure out what your preferences are.
i actually use all weapons except insect glave and dbs, just detest the movesets for each of those.
Example: Poke, poke, poke. You can use guard/counter at anytime reset the combo so it could be:
Poke->Poke->Counter/Guard->Poke->Poke->Poke->Counter/Guard->Poke->Poke->Poke->Dash Thrust->Poke->Poke->Guard. Mix it up and repeat as many time as you can before the monster flee away from your pointy stick and you have to chase after it.
Skip to 5:18 of the video to see some Lance shenanigans.

I'm just laughing. ''tag, you're it! No you're it, lol no i tagged you back''.
Y'know, I already had so much respect for the Lance after seeing two dudes just absolutely tank Fatalis' fire cone of death wielding it. But that bit where this Hunter's trading blows with Zinogre was awesome!
...that said op trust the wheel and join the doots side. Hunting Horns: we have sick beats. Both kinds of them. Also buffs for days. Buffs for all. So many buffs even the Chef can't say 'you ain't buff enough.' Buffs that render HR Vaal a rotting joke of a dragon and then buffs that render HR Kushala just a big steely windbag. Buffs that keep you from getting stunned, raise your resistances to the various elements, cure male pattern baldness, and then buffs that absolutely concuss whatever's on the receiving end of your Scottish mace of MIGHT.
Then ignore what I just said about the doots side completely because Hammer's still got a point.
I liked SnS in prev game, but they change the opening strike and make it weird. In prev games, the opening strike is the bread n butter, plus easy, intuitive to use. I main GS in prev games, but my bait n punish play doesnt work well here coz the environment has so much variance.
