wakeup TCS?
so i try blocking in front of the monster's head, roll back while holding block and forward, then go through the charged slash combo into TCS. however this never seems to work, the first slam of TCS always hits first even though it doesnt seem to be anywhere near the monster's head... what am i doing wrong?

You walk until you run into the head, block, roll back 180 and go like an inch further back. Just tap the left stick like once or twice, the TCS has pretty good range. That should be where you start. Basically you gotta compensate for the space you advance pn the boss when you turn around. Just move a step further away. That said some monsters are curled up which from what i found out offsets their hitboxes abit. Alot of it is just trial and error. There's no 1 size fits it all.

With wich promp would you recommend to practice in the training grounds?. Since I use evade extender, Im trying to find a setup that works with it; but when I practice on the pole, my hits seem to hit more offten than when I practice on the explosive barrel infront of it; even when using the same setup on both.

I'm not too sure myself, my dude. This is my first MH game and i'm only like 70ish hours into it myself. I don't use evade extender, i just kept waking them up with TCS and 90% of the time what i wrote above worked. Not sure if the hitbox is jarred because of how curled up they are or if TCS has phantom range.
All i can tell ya, i run up to the head (or w/e part i wanna hit), block, roll back 180, wiggle back another like 2 ant steps, turn around and start the wallop.
Hopefully someone else can help you more. That's what works for me. Good luck my dude.

Edit: Evade Extender obviously messes with the distance. So you gotta account for that aswell after you roll back once. I'd asume you're taking it into account but just on the offchance you're not, i wanted to mention it.
The evade extender doesn't add too much reach to the roll but it's enough for the weak 1st TCS hit to connect with it's phantom range if you don't factor it in.

You literally have a training area to... you know... train.
Do need to take note that slopes will alter TCS wake up distances.

I asked mostly becuase you sounded like an experience GS usrer Krampus, Im picking up the weapon and still struggle to find a consistent setup for my build lol. Even after using training grounds to find what works for me.

make sure you're not hitting the wings or something on accident. most monsters you should be attacking the side of their face rather than on their nose because of how they're curled up

if you're unsure on the distance, try to be further away than you need to and then slowly move forward if you miss. you don't lose anything.

Usually you need to be 'slightly more than the length of your sword' away

you can also aim the sword while its charging if your scared. like, aim to the sides on the first few swings then re-aim back on it's head or whatever

when you block at the monster's head, you shouldn't be touching it. just standing slightly before it

Based on my experience I can only think of 3 culprits,
- evade extender,
- you take a wee step forward on your first swing,
- or those damn slopes messing with your tcs distance.
