The lightning only strikes in front of Behemoth I believe. But one surefire way to survive it is to superman dive once it begins and stay down.
This is correct for EXTREMOTH. But for normal behemoth, there is no need to go to this trouble.
1. Pack 3 flash pods, 10 flash bugs and put the crafting on your radial menu.
2. When Behemoth starts to cast tornados, flash him.
3. Go back to camp to restock each phase. Even if you're the only guy flashing him, 13 is more than enough for each phase.
This will stop tornadoes without needing to worry about the enmity mechanic.

I'm currently using this build, it's one of the "poverty" builds on my way to iceborne builds but it's what I can come up with using the decos I have. I have a few Critical Eye ones too and some defensive ones.
I'll try the superman dive, but... doesn't that just kill you since the lightning is a floor effect? I read that the attack is in a fanned out pattern like this (head at top)
(head)
// || \\
and you're supposed to stand here
//safe||safe\\
I'll stop trying to aggro if it's not worth it then, thanks.
You need, like really need, Health Boost 3.
You are fully invulnerable during a superman dive, no matter what (except to things like Ecliptic Meteor). "Floor effect" seems to be a misconception, there is no such thing. Superman diving is extremely important because of this, learn to abuse it!
For the record, it's better to stand here
(head) safe
// || \\
Then you can hit its head (be careful not to hit chest), and easily roll to his rear when lightning starts. No bolts hit behind him. Never stand directly in front of Behemoth (there is an exception for HBG tanks but nobody uses those for normal Behe anyway)
Yeah, for normal Behemoth, it's not worth it at all. Just flash once you see the "Behemoth is casting Charybdis" notice. That's all there is to it.
Yeah I have that equipped too, I just didn't bother filling in all the decos
Thanks, but no thanks, I want to do it myself.
/ \ lines (directly in front of behemoth's head doesn't have hitbox),
or stay under it's armpit (sometimes you still get hit if you stand too close to it's head)
Easiest way to fight behemoth using a charge blade is get one with impact phial (defender), slot some artillery + guard, then charge + spam SAED at its butt. If you play this way, you can swap Weakness Exploit and Critical Boost for other survival skills, as impact phial is not affect by and will not crit.
Another cheese tricks involve mounting the behemoth. It will not cast most dangerous moves when someone is mounting it. So if you prolong a mount by purposely not doing finisher attack, your team can deal damage until a certain knockdown threshold. Don note that even it doesn't deal its most damaging moves when mounted, it can still hurt others while struggling, so mount cheese is not the best strategy.
And yeah, Health Boost 3 is a must have from end game high rank onward, including start of Iceborne. Guard Up is also recommended so you can GP into SAED.
I have one question though, after the third phase, when he goes into Nerg's lair, how many more phases are there? Just so I know what I'm in for.
As Dextro said, 4!
Eventually you'll beat it. But if you feel like fighting the thing robs the fun out of MHW, then don't do it. Its gear is irrelevant in Master Rank anyway
1) Do iceborne lol. Masterrank armor is waaaaay better than anything the main game has. We're talking miles apart.
2) Don't open it up to 4 people. Try an just duo it with someone. Is easier.
3) Bring a lot of flashpods. That way it can't cast the tornados.
Also unless you are a Kinsect Glaive user, I wouldn't worry too much about this fight.
