While sword mode is king when it comes to damage, its important to switch to axe mode whenever you anticipate the monsters dashing around. It also just takes some practice learning the patterns of monsters.
dont run to the monster .. they will come to you..(outside from teamplay)
unlock bugtrapper(ancient forest) early that gives you 3 sapper traps per monster for free.
As an SnS main you should be familiar with positioning and attack windows, I dunno about you but I don't always utilize the iframes on backstep to get perfect rush started, and any window the PR fits in without the iframe every other weapon can also take advantage of.
You just have to get used to not overextending since you can't raise your shield at the last second if you don't have one. Shields are so strong, I just took down the first bagelgoose I encountered while still wearing my low rank gear on my lance file.
If you are in sword mode, tap dodge to hop, tap it again to roll, then tap transform to switch to axe mid roll, and you do a transformation attack that covers a massive distance, especially with evade extender on. Plus, it leaves you in axe mode that lets you run around quickly. That is how you chase down monsters with SA.
For something like GS or GL, you use quicksheath 2 or 3, and you sheath your weapon before sprinting after the monster.
Also: Both make it easier to avoid attacks as well. Evade extender can more easily dodge out of the way of attacks. GS can tackle through hits or sheath and super man dive. Etc.
You only go after it when it leaves huge of opening like other suggested.
For example, if you are chasing F.rajang around you definitely are going to eat his instant punch, tripped a lot. you bait it until its going to beam and there you go, your opening.
also the last but not least zsd whenever u can(premature release it so u can doge in-coming attack)... in multiplayer stabing your friend in the back with sword mode is preferable for dps
Hop -> Roll -> Transformation Attack
as far as other tips go and multiplayer, it's all fairly weapon specific. like for switch axe, one of the things you can do to close distance is in axe mode, roll towards a monster one or two times and use the morphing sword slash out of the roll, it covers a lot of distance.
for some monsters, it's preferable to stay in axe mode and use the power axe mode buff (heavy slam after 3 wild swings to activate this if you have iceborne) and try to get flinches/topples using the extra part damage before you go hacking away in sword mode. an example of where you'd do this is a monster like tigrex
Also a point or two of evade extender on switch axe may help in general, but there are definitely fights where you don't want to move that far. just be mindful about it and experiment
