Is it worth starting this game again?
I played this game when it was released for xbox back in 2018. I saw that wilds was in open beta and wanted to get back into the series but wasn't sure if there were any activity due to it being a 6 year old game.

If it is the case that there's an active community and player base would anyone have any recommendations for starting weapons and armours?

Plenty of players still playing. Hop in and get hunting.

I recommend avoiding the Guardian armor and defender weapons if you want the intended experience.

I'm guessing that the Guardian armour and defender weapons are rank 1 with rank 3 stats?

what would you say about the iceborne dlc is it worth it? as its only £10 and supposed to add a ton of things to the game

If you like World, Iceborne is a must-have.

I revisited the game after 5 years and my journey was fantastic. I did not restart. Iceborne was not a thing when I last played so I paid for that and continued my finished base game save. No regrets. I got a little lost remembering all of my items and loadouts etc but it didn't take long to shake the rust off. That old gear will quickly get replaced by new things you just made.

Iceborne throws so much more variety at you while also keeping monsters introduced in the base game relevant. It didn't feel like I was continuing an old save on a new expansion. It felt like I was importing a save to a sequel.

I cannot praise it enough. I have played many expansions for many games over the decades and very few are comparable to this in value.

Unlike me, my flatmate only just bought the base game recently for his PS4. He had a decent time and then he bought the expansion. He never once lost the steam to power through the entire thing, solo, no defender set or anything. He ended up coming to the same conclusion about Iceborne. I find it kind of hard to imagine playing without it again.

started a fresh character 2 days ago, plenty of people still play, and you'll quests or people joining your quests rather easy.

i started again last night raced through character creation just so i could start playing and ended up starting with the guardian armour as i didn't really look at the options just used a preset facec clicked continue and started playing, as soon as i got to camp i changed to the chainmail armour and a long sword. now just waiting for the big difficulty spike when i go up against the fire lizard (anjanath).

thank you for your replies.

The Guardian/Defender gear is strong enough to carry you all the way through the entire base game. That is actually its explicit purpose, since it was initially meant as a way for players to catch up to the Iceborne expansion. That armor is all but useless once you push into Iceborne content but the weapons can still carry themselves a good way into the expansion.

The reason its suggested to not use Guardian/Defender gear isn't because its too strong but because it can build a lot of bad habits throughout the base game that can be difficult to unlearn when it comes time to push into the expansion content. If your confident that isn't going to be an issue for you and you just want to get to the expansion fairly quickly then using the Guardian/Defender gear is warranted.

Do not use Defender gear or just skip to HR or MR using a save

I changed it as soon as i logged in to chainmail armour as i thought it wouldn't give me the same sense of achievement as when i first played.
