2. The sweeping beam, straight beam, frost pool, and the ice explosion are good openings.

3. If you're fast, you can clutch claw onto her to punish the downwards breath. Alternatively, you can wait for the first ring to explode and then roll into that space for a punish.

4. Tailcuts have no effect on her moveset.

5. Target the head; enough damage to it will put her into a special topple like other elders.

6. Resuscitate is an excellent skill to run against Velk, as the improvements to stamina regen while blighted will totally nullify the effects of Iceblight.

7. Tailstabs and sweeps can be iframed. I recommend EW 2 for this fight.

8. I think Elderseal helps break her ice armor, but honestly I just beat her face in with raw damage so I don't know how effective it is.

9. Temporal and Iceproof mantles are fairly good options, especially if you've upgraded the latter.

10. Consider slotting in Airborne if your weapon's aerial attacks are strong (ex: GS, Hammer). Velkhana creates ice walls with some attacks that can be shattered and then used as ledges, which creates an uncommonly large number of opportunities for mounting attacks.

What're your armor, weapon(s), skills?
Have you tried eating elemental def up in the canteen?
Ice resistance jewels?
What move(s) make you cart?
There are 3 assignments with velkana, in which location do you fight her?

Learn her moveset, once you get used to it she becomes much easier.

"Tips" are something I can't really give unless you give more information about your weapon, armor, skills, etc.

If it's the first time through story, at that point, your old gear is getting obsolete. If you've been playing the game with low MR armor or HR armor, it's time to upgrade your gear to near end-game monsters now.

Also use your armor spheres to upgrade your armor. You'll be swimming in them, so just use them.

Ice mantle is a good alternative too vitality. (potentially lasts longer & shorter down time)

I dunno what you mean with 'strength' but if it's attack up than you should probably switch to something that maximizes crit.

Have you upgraded your armor?

The second quest is in elders recess. There are 2 crystals you can drop on her for a lot of damage and a free down.

Do you also use wallbangs often?

To avoid any of her attacks just circle towards her left (your right) and you mostly don't even need to dodge roll. Moving perpendicular to her nullifies every move she has apart from her AOE breath attacks such as the sweep (which is avoided by RUNNING right instead of walking, complicated I know) and her vertical breath which creates an expanding circle of ice (which is avoided by walking or running away).

From there it's the same old deal of identifying what attacks of hers have a slow enough recovery for you to sneak a hit or two in.

She usually does the sweeping ice bean if she's far away, so just be ready to sheathe and dive. The straight ones are easy to avoid by strafing, and shell do two in a row when enraged. When flying, the only ice beam she has shoots straight out and then underneath and behind her as she lands.
