Fishing...
So, I'm not a big fan of that neither in real life, nor in games and it's the only thing I haven't done, yet in MHW. Any reason to try it? Good rewards? Good interplay with other mechanics? Stuff like that.

well there's a trophy for fishing and there a weapon that lock on fishing event.

Whetfish can drop scales that sharpen faster than the normal whetstone, but otherwise fish offer no other truly special loot that can't be obtained in some other way. Their main purpose is to fill your fish tank/pond in your personal room for display purposes, and a couple achievements.

Oh, and a greatsword from an event quest.

Sushifish/whetfish if you’re not in the mood to just use an item shop mod and skip the grind to obtain them

As someone who spams the ♥♥♥♥ out of whetfish, I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ despise the mini game

Okay, so how the ♥♥♥♥ does realling in the fish work? I'm hitting all the right button prompts + LT with the quick time event but bigger fish always escape

Assuming you're using a Xbox controller, spam B, and press whichever direction they tell you. If you spam B fast enough, you'll reel in the fish before it can even try to mix you up.

Small fish will be reeled in with a single press of B.

You can also catch fish with the capture net, but this will cause all other fish to despawn a couple seconds later.

I'm doing exactly that and haven't been able to catch a single larger fish, yet! What am I doing wrong?

Man, I hate frigging quicktime events! This ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ quick press ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is the reason I can only use ultra expensive Razer Gamepads cause they are among the few which have microtriggers. Even with that I'm hardly quick enough with my thumb with continuous button presses cause my thumb always tenses up after a few presses. This ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ BS should be banned from any game forever! They don't add anything either gameplay wise except frustration!

quicktime? What quicktime? Mash the button and hold opposite when it swings side to side. If it's not easy enough, there is a fishing necklace that makes it practically free.
Fish can also be captured using the hunting net. In most pools the first net will scare the rest of the fish away, but a few pools don't despawn them properly so go wild.

Fishing is a very minor activity and it's more of a way to destress than an actual loot mechanic. For a stressful game like monster hunter, quiet little activities like this are great. The whetfish are pretty handy for their special whetsone scales, though.

So, you have to push the stick to the opposite direction to what's shown on screen?
Apart from that mashing the buttons quickly is something my fingers can't do very well. Precision? Yes - I can fold a tiny origami bird with just one hand. Quick button mashes on the other hand - very stressful.

Fishing with a rod is slow and pointless, Just use a net to catch several in a second or two, then keep running.

If you put the same amount of effort into fishing that you do into complaining, you'd have a bag full of fish. Twice as many with the fishing perk. But with hands that crippled, monster hunter is probably the wrong genre to be playing in the first place.

there is big fish

Fishing are endemic life so there's Canteen ingredient for catching fish. There's also Delivery quests for catching them.

IIRC, you can just spam any direction, there's no lost progress if you "fail" the quicktime so you don't actually need to worry about timing it properly (IDK what the buttons are like on keyboard so no idea if thats easier or harder), but maybe i am misremembering- it's always been more efficient to just learn to aim the capture net instead for whatever you're trying to get. can catch multiple fish in a single net too, and there tends to be enough fishing spots that its hard to run out of them even with them fleeing. though its not like i ever used them myself to be fair.
i think the whetfish fin+ are supposed to be really good, particularly on endgame fights with less opportunities to sharpen, but not so much so that they're worth farming imo, especially being rarer than the normal whetfish lol

it's just a cute little optional minigame you can do, same as capturing pets, with npcs that have some optional requests involving them
