As for a faster top tier weapon, use long sword. It has the most users for a reason.
And even AsmondGold was able to solo the game with Great Sword.
you do know vidya games are supposed to be fun right kid?
"clunky" =/= "I suck at this"
This game just punishes you for not aiming and for spamming.
Clunky basically means "clumsy in design or execution". So like if you hit forward and roll, and your character did a back hop, because it takes longer to register the forward input, or you tapped attack and it did a charged attack, then that would be clunky. This game is not that.
The issue is that rather than accepting that you are bad, and attempting to improve, you are trying to shift the blame onto the game instead. Until you realize that, you will not be able to improve nor find the game fun.
Here are a few videos to prove it (not mine)

If you want an easier time? There's Heavy or Light Bowguns for that. No other weapons are generally as strong as these are, or more specifically, the Heavy Bowgun.
Animation locks are, for better or worse, part of the playstyle in this series. A big part of the skill ramp is learning how long various animations take, and being able to make snap decisions on whether you can land a hit or need to cancel before committing to it. There's a tempo to the fights, and while everyone takes hits, once you figure out the tempo, things get a lot more intuitive, and combat starts to flow.
I can't speak as to which weapon has the quickest/least-punishing animation sequences - I'm a switch axe main, and have been since they first came out in the series - but if you can get past your inhibitions about animation locks and invest the time to learn them, any weapon is usable. There's players that solo endgame content with greatswords.
Each weapon has a variety of fast moves, slow moves, safe moves and risky moves. Even the dual blades -which new players think is super fast- has a blender attack that locks your hunter in place for several seconds.
For a starting weapon, I think greatsword is the best choice. It has a great mix of offense, defense, a chance to observe monsters, and its attack style fits in great with the turn based logic of the game. Sheathe your weapon, let the monster attack, then rush in for a quick, moderate or heavy attack. Sheathe, run away, observe the next attack and repeat. There is a block, so if you struggle with dodging some moves, just slam R2 and pray. There is a B button for other attacks, but it's generally a drag and you can beat the entire game without touching it. Most of your life is spent sheathed so you have quick access to potions, plus full mobility while waiting for the next opening. When things get good you can slam down a monstrous TCS for the huge damage dopamine rush.
Other weapons are excellent in their own way, but nothing is quite as accessible as the great sword imo. The smaller weapons put you too close to the monster, making it difficult to observe their moves, and some weapons have a very difficult time escaping to heal. Some weapons rely on a delicate dance of attack and counters, so they don't shine until after you master a fight. Greatsword can do excellent work early on, help hunters learn the game quickly, and scales up with skill in a very satisfying way.
It also might suck being told but this game very much is about learning the weapon you use, learning the monster and the mechanics of the game in general. So in short getting good.
I've played 1000s of games, the combat in this game is clunky as ♥♥♥♥ lol. I understand it is on purpose, and if i want to play ill have to git good at it.
but just cuz its your favorite game and your personally taking offense that i find it clunky and asked for tips for a less-clunky weapon doesn't mean its open season on projecting your insecurities into this thread lol.
im not even having any trouble with the game that i need to "git good" about. I just don't find the game to feel "good" to play. it feels "clunky". have any of you ever tried a game called warframe? to turn that off and turn this on feels awful. maybe git good at touching grass i dk.
thanks for the advice buckos.
Try longsword it's the most noob friendly weapon
And what are the games you're comparing with MH? This isn't a hack and slash or character action game. You can't just smash a monster and get a 5sec i-frame buff from late dodging or something like that. It's more like a "simulation" where you have to read the monsters expressions to know when it's exhausted and time to attack with "clunky moves".
you, particularly, have some serious reflection to do. If you read my OP i just wanted tips to better enjoy the feel of the game, because I'm not enjoying the feel of the game currently.
you, because of your insecurities, tripled down on using that as an opportunity to dismiss my opinion of the game and tell me im bad at it. LOL.
to all the actual helpful replies, TY.
I understand now the chunkiness is by design. And you getting punished for mashing your combo at the wrong time. I'll prob stick with longsword and some dual blades since they don't feel as slow and boring as the greatsword felt.
