if you talk to the commander in seliana you get an assignment to hunt a tempered nightshade poulumu and a tempered rathian

like Pro Gamer Man said, there's an Assignment (not Special) that you receive from someone in Seliana after hitting 49 to unlock the cap. the same thing will happen at 69, and 99. doing these also unlocks more levels for your Guiding Lands areas (lvl 5 max after 49, 6 after 69, and 7 after 99). Look for the exclamation point on the map.
